opinions on bumbos and bathtubs

I registered for a bathtub and of course received 4 at my shower. I am now debating returning all of them. Although our condo is a 3/2, there still isnt a lot of room and certainly no storage. I do not want my only guest bathroom to be filled with baby stuff as we tend to have a lot of out of state guests joys of living where its warm!

Can I just use the sink? Also, I received a bumbo seat...opinions on these???

Re: opinions on bumbos and bathtubs

  • Personally I wouldn't want to use the sink for 6 months (roughly the age they start sitting up on their own). You could look into one of those mesh thingies that fold up if you want to save space maybe.

As for bumbos, we liked ours, but I wouldn't say it's a necessity or anything and we didn't use it a ton. It was nice for keeping DS upright and in one place, so he could "join in" on us sitting at the table or whatever, but we would have been fine without it.

  • I personally found a baby bath tub enough of a must that I found storage in my 1 bed//1 bath NYC apartment (think shoebox sized). We used it until our kids could sit up well enough to use the big tub. I never had a bumbo and never "missed" it. They always seemed like they were useful for a hot second and then sat in the closet collecting dust.

  • We used the baby bathtub for the first 6 months or so.  It was helpful when they can not sit.

The bumbo we loved but I know some people do not.  I used it for sitting practice and I did feed her in it.  So at about 4-5 months when geting cereal I would just feed her in that insead of putting her in the high chair.  I t was easy and portable.

Can you store the bathtub under the crib? That's where mine is right now :) I would take the rest back though :)

  • Our hospital actually suggested me bathing with our daughter before we were released and it was so much easier for me that I never used a tub with her until she could sit on her own. At that point we got the inflatable duck tub which worked well until I trusted her to be in the big tub. We had a tub that we never used and it just took up space.

  • I think a baby tub is a necessity. They are so fragile and slippery when they're young! I liked being able to plop Ds in the tub and let the warm water relax him.

I liked my bumbo, but not a necessity. If I hadn't borrowed mine from my Sil, I wouldn't have purchased it on my own. But Ds liked it and we did use it.

    All of this.

I would not want to bathe in a sink (gross)... so I wouldn't put my baby in one.

We did use the Bubmo in lieu of a high chair at first.  It was nice but we could have lived without it.

  • I have a bumbo and I barely use it. My little one is almost 5 months now and ive only used it a handful of times. Usually she is in her jumper, swing, or my lap. The bumbo and bouncer I got are a waste of money and space.

  • keep one bathtub you like - whichever one is contoured and can lay baby down on a slant comfortably.

and for the bumbo, i hope to get one for my son!! i hear they are great!! they come with a tray so they can sit and eat

  • Return bumbo.  We were given one and hardly used it.  Not helpful or necessary.  LO will sit up when ready.

Keep one tub you find easiest to use/store.  We found it very helpful when DD was very little.  We then switched to an inflatable tub and used that for over a year.

We couldn't really do the sink bathing as the sinks weren't very wide and were deep in the kitchen, but really too small in the bathrooms.  So the tub was a must for us until she could sit up safely, and even after, we used the inflatable one (not for infants) when she got bigger so we didn't have to fill the whole bathtub each time.

  • A bathtub is handy until they can sit upright on their own and safely sit in a regular bathtub. In addition, it was nice to save water and just use a gallon or two to fill that up, as opposed to a larger tub or sink.

Never had a Bumbo. I'm not a fan of forcing a child to sit upright before they're ready to do so, so I never saw a need for it. We didn't start solids until DD showed all readiness cues (just over 6 months) and by then we just used the high chair. -Which was a Chicco 360 and I highly recommend. Takes up very little space and easy to break down and take anywhere.

  • I didn't use the bumbo seat for long, DD eventually figured out around 4 months how to get out. I forgot where I stored the bathtub, but they are better then the sink specially in the begining.
  • We got this on recommendation from my sister - and you can just hang it on back of door or back of tub when done:

We are so thankful that our second daughter, Lillian Elizabeth "Lily", was born healthy and happy on February 11, 2013.  We love her to pieces.

We lost our first daughter, Hannah Grace on May 4, 2011.  She was buried on May 14 during a beautiful service at my home church. We are grateful that if she could not be here with us, that she is healed and whole with the Lord. We look forward to the day when we will get to meet her. We love her so much.

  • No on Bumbo's in the bathtub.
  • You can just lay a folded up towel in the bathtub and fill the tub up with an inch or two of water, and lay the baby on the towel. Obviously keep hands and eyes on baby at all times, so they don't roll over into the water or anything.

  • I found a bathtub extremely useful with my DD. As for the bumbo, we used it a lot. A PP mentioned the recall, but it was due to parents not having common sense and putting the bumbo on a raised surface and then the child falling. It's not a necessary item, though.
  • This tub is a little costly, but if you're returning four normal tubs you might be fine-

    https://www.booninc.com/products/Naked/614

    It collapses flat for storage.

As far as the Bumbo, we didn't use ours a ton with DD but I plan on getting a bebe pod for this LO to use as a high chair instead of the Chicco one we have from DD because it's HUGE.

  • The baby bathtub is a waste of space, time, money and energy. Just use the sink. We got one of those big bath sponges to put in the sink. It wrings out, can go in washer, and dries quickly in dish drainer. For those people who say ew, how dirty is your sink? Clean it. ;)

Bumbo- we liked it, but not a necessity either. They outgrow it quickly.

  • You could just use the sink, but it might be a pain. Have you looked at getting a bath sling instead? It takes up less room than a baby tub, and you can use it in your tub or shower.

We liked our bumbo seat. It was great for when DD couldn't sit up on her own.

  • I bathed with DS when he was a newborn. I had an infant bather but it was really inconvenient for me. Taking our bath together was relaxing for the both of us. I ended up donating the barely used baby bath that I had.

As for the Bumbo, I bought a used one at Once Upon A Child and used it for a couple weeks. IMO, it was helpful to get DS to have a feel for sitting up, and then he did on his own shortly thereafter. I only spent $15 on it, and then just donated that too when he was finished with it. I'd never spend the money on a new one, but that's just how I feel about them.

  • I didn't want to have to deal with storing a tub either, so I got a baby bath sling, one of the mesh things, and loved it. I used that until she could sit up on her own and it is small and light enough to store on a suction cup hook in the tub when not in use.

As for the bumbo, we have the other version of this, the Bebe Pod, that came with a tray and we have actually used it a ton! When she was just sitting up we would hook toys on it for play, when she started eating soloids we would bring it with us as a portable high hair to people's homes or to restaurants, and we use it now as a booster at our kitchen table (without the tray). And FWIW everyone I know with a bumbo has said they barely used it and the kids outgrow it and can't physically fit in there for very long.

  • I think the bath tub is something you definitely will want for your baby..we had a teeny, tiny apartment at the time and we just left it in the tub hanging up.  I think it would be more of a pain to not have it and being worried about space is kind of silly, specially if you have 2 bathrooms!  The only times I bathed DD in the sink was when I was visiting my parents and she was old enough to sit up.

The bumbo is great..it has nothing to do with "forcing a baby to sit on their own"..that is ridiculous.  I have been a nanny for years and every baby who has sat in one, starting around 3 months..LOVES them and the ability to sit up and look around. If you got it as a gift, great..even more reason to keep it, buy a tray for it from target and you will be happy! The recalls were due to ditsy parents who would walk away from baby when it is on an elevated surface.  We used ours for when we first fed DD solids..it came in very handy.  And I'm pretty sure you weren't thinking about the bumbo in the tub, but just to make sure..the bumbo can't be used in the bath..it will just float!

This, which is apparently the UO here.

We had a sling type thing that came with the crap tub we got, so I put that in the sink and it was great.

And yes, me cleaning the sink every day meant that she was bathing in something most likely cleaner than my shower.  Nothing gross there.  And it saved my back soooo much.

The Bumbo wasn't a necessity, but some people use it a lot for feeding or other stuff.  Who knows, I might use it more with #2.

The recall was effing stupid.  It tells you never to put it on an elevated surface, people did, didn't hold their kid, then got upset when they fell.  We never used it on anything other than the floor and didn't have an issue.

I hate when people don't use common sense and then blame it on a product.

  • LO hated sitting up and being strapped into anything, so the bumbo was a bad investment for us (plus her thighs were so chunky, she never really fit in it). We had a bath pod and were able to use it for about 3 mos before she outgrew it. We then moved on to the inflatable duck tub. I nannied for a woman who only showered with her babies, so a tub isn't absolutely necessary, but I'd recommend it.

  • I got a Bumbo from a friend for free, and my son liked it well enough for three months or so.  I don't think I would have paid more than about $15 or $20 for it, though.  We did put it on the table, so I could feed him (ours has a detachable white tray), or on the kitchen counter so he could watch me cook,  but we never left him in it on the table and walked away.  I never bothered calling to get the stupid seatbelt for th thing because, much like the drop-side crib recall, the dangers in the product are really parental error or stupidity.

We had a small mesh chaise lunge thingy (also free from the same friend) that we used in the kitchen sink for our baby until he was too big to fit.  As someone else said, it totally saved my back.  We received a baby tub as a gift, which we used until he could reliably sit up on his own and not flop over (5 months??? can't rememebr exactly) but if I hadn't gotten it as a gift, I would probably just get an inflatable seat/barrier thing for the bath.

Agreed. I really disliked using those plastic baby bathtubs, thought they were unruly and a PITA. We ended up just using the yellow bath sponge in the sink or tub filled with just a few inches of water.

Also in the minority here, but I liked the Bumbo a lot.

You had me until the drop side crib. There was no user error. Manufacturers started making cribs with plastic screws and this was the issue. Do a little research.

  • No to the bathtub.  We had a really small apartment first time around too and just got into the tub with her.  It was actually really nice bonding time.

Yes to the bumbo.  I think they're perfectly safe if you use them correctly and I used it all.the.time with DD.  I waited until she was about 3-4 months to start using it but from that point until she was too big for it I probably used it daily if even for a few minutes. She didn't like her bouncy seat or swing but loved the bumbo.

  • I don't like baby bathtubs.  I got rid of ours after a couple of uses with my first daughter, and just kept the mesh sling and used that in the regular tub with a little water for my next 2 babies.  It keeps them elevated, keeps them from sliding around, and frees up both your hands.  Little babies are slippery!

I like the bumbo for when they start holding their head up.  Just something else to keep them upright.
