Craft idea

I made this glitter bottle for DD today and she loves it!  It was really easy and only cost about $10.  Eventually, my plan would be to use it for time out (like the blog does), but for now she loves watching the glitter settle.  We have an hour drive tomorrow to visit a friend and I'm hoping this will keep her occupied in the car for a little.

  • These are a big hit at our house! They are almost as much fun to make as they are to play with. Liam has 6 discovery bottles right now. He prefers the glitter (I made a green one) and the "bean shaker".

Are you using water in all of them? I thought maybe clear corn syrup would move slower. I'm think of making them in some baby food jars, too.

I mainly make the glitter bottles with corn syrup. Other alternatives I have noticed people using are hair gel and shampoo...but I prefer corn syrup.

I like the baby food jar idea but the few jars that we have left over are glass and I'm afraid he would throw them (it's a phase for him).

  • I'm such a lazy mom. I just let my kid shake his snack container with puffs in it.

In a sort of related note, my son LOVES balloons so I blew one up and put a little water in it. He's fascinated by it!

Good idea with the balloons! Before the glitter bottle, minced garlic from the spice cabinet was her favorite rattle.

Thanks so much for sharing!  I will be all over this craft.  I have no doubt that dd will love it.

Make sure you use REALLY hot water so the glue melts. Hope G likes it!

I just looked at the tutorial for the first time. Do you think you'd get the same result with water, corn syrup and just plain glitter (not glue). Or would it be too thin? It kind of seems like the thickness of the corn syrup could take the place of the glitter glue.

You get a very similar result. We usually make our with whatever we have on hand, which is usually corn syrup, glitter, and a bit of water. I'll also make variations. For example: DS has two glitter bottles right now. The green one is made with corn, syrup, water, and multi-colored glitter. The second one is made up of water and little vegetable oil and alphabet confetti. The bubbles keep the Alphabet letters separated.

There are a ton of different ways to make these. I think there are several good ideas on Pinterest.

  • I've seen those on Pinterest, adorable!

Is the lid glued shut?  I'd hate for there to be a major tantrum which led to that glittery blob getting dumped out on the floor someday...

Yup, I use the hot glue gun.

Haha...oh yes. We used super glue, but that's what I had on hand.

You know, I was thinking about this. The glitter glue kind of dyed the water a pink color which I like. Zimger...when you use just corn syrup, does it just stay clear? I don't know if just plain glitter would turn the syrup a color.

It will eventually take on some of the color from the glitter. I'm not sure if it will be as pronounced as the dye from the glitter glue.

You can also use a bit of food coloring that is similar to the color of the glitter. That should create a similar effect.
