Eating too much at night...

Well ds#2 has never been a "great" sleeper.  He will be 5 months old tomorrow and still gets up 5-10 times/night (usually eating for most of them). He is now FF'ed and will eat anywhere from 1-4oz each waking in the MOTN.

During the night he will eat a total of about 16oz of formula.  I know he is doing this partly because he is not eating enough during the day.  I would say he eats about the same (16oz) during the day time.

How can I get him to eat more during the day?  He is not very interested in feeding and if I put the bottle in his mouth when he is not hungry he just spits it out.

~after 34 cycles we finally got our 2nd little bundle of joy~

Re: Eating too much at night...

  • Are you working? I don't have experience with FF, but I know BF babies can reverse cycle (eat all night) if they don't see their mom during the day. Can you offer a bedtime snack-type bottle right before he goes to sleep?

Both my kids woke up a ton at that age, too.

  • We're having this issue a bit now. O is too fascinated with the goings on during the day to want to really eat. In order to push him to take in calories during the day versus at night, we've been gradually reducing the amount of formula in his bottles that he gets when he wakes overnight. The idea/hope is that he will get just enough to be satiated overnight and then be hungry during the day until you eliminate night feedings because he's eating plenty during the daytime. It takes time but I think this is finally working for us. He was taking full feedings - 6 oz - at each night waking. So one night we went down to 5 oz. Did that a night or two, then went down to 4 oz. Yes, your baby might wake up a bit more while night-weaning but give it time and be persistent. We went down to 3 oz too soon and he was up a LOT and fussing, so we went back up to 4 oz and are hanging there right now. He won't take more than 4 oz overnight now even if it's offered. How fast to drop oz and how many oz to drop will obviously vary with your baby.

Additionally, we ALWAYS try something else before a bottle overnight. Rocking, reswaddling, etc. GL and HTH!
