Tummy sleeping?

So I just saw the dc put E down on her tummy in her crib.  Being a way over protective FTM, I watched like a hawk.  And sure enough, within minutes she was asleep.  At home, she nurses to sleep for naps and bedtime, and is still swaddled at bedtime, and wakes up every hour until I give up and put her in bed with me.  Is there an age where it's okay to put them down on their tummies?  She has been rolling from tummy to back for a very long time, but still struggles to roll from back to tummy, her arm always seems to get in the way.  WDYT?

Re: Tummy sleeping?

  • P is a tummy sleeper and din't sleep decently until we gave in and put him on his tummy. When we did, he could roll from tummy to back but not from back to tummy. He could also lift up on his arms during tummy time and had good head control. He was about the same age as your LO - maybe a touch younger if anything. At first DH slept on the floor next to his crib. We were worry warts. But P was totally fine and slept so much better!

Thanks!  This is encouraging news.  I am sure all of our sleep issues will not be solved by simply turning her to her tummy.  But maybe it will help some!

  • I always put them to bed on their backs, but didn't worry if they had rolled over to their tummy. I think maybe if she can roll from tummy to back you could try to put her down on her tummy since if she were to get sick or whatever, she could roll herself over and not be face first in it until you hear her cries and can come get her.

Sorry if TMI, but we've had a lot of stomach virus in this house recently so it is on my mind. :(

  • As long as she can lift and turn her head easily, and preferably hold herself up on her forearms a little, it's fine.

  • If I put dex down on his tummy he hates it, but most nights when I put him down on his back he almost always immediately rolls to his side or tummy to sleep. His sleeping is somewhat more erratic now that he's able to move all over the crib.

E should be fine on her tummy. Soon enough she will figure the arm thing out and she will be on her tummy all the time!

  • I think it's fine if she can roll from her tummy to her back. I always put DS to sleep on his back when he was little, but I didn't fight it once he started rolling to his tummy on his own.

  • Thanks everyone.  I may try putting her on her tummy at least for the couple of hours she's in bed before I go to bed (so I can watch) and see what happens.  I would sure love to find a way for her to get a little better sleep!

  • I was putting Bren to sleep on his tummy by 5ish months for sure.  He just slept better that way.  If she can roll to her tummy I would think it's fine.  Once B could there was no stopping him and he immediately rolls to tummy to sleep.  When I started him at 6 months with his current DCP I told her she could put him on his tummy and she said she couldn't.  Very quickly she realized he did it himself. :)

Just don't swaddle her on her tummy. :)

  • Now that E can roll from tummy to back I wouldn't be too concerned.  Babies do typically sleep better on their tummies & its hard to fight it when they are that way inclined.
