Would you cook and eat lasagna noodles..

that have an expiration date of April 11, 2008  (Yeah, it's oddly specific)

My mom likes to force...err... give things to us.  She's not a hoarder, I promise, but obviously she had this WAAAAY in the back of her pantry or something.

Would you use them?

ETA:  I don't plan to....  they're like $1.25 for pete's sake.....  but I'm just curious because my sister said she would since she knows where they came from (clean, dry, pest-free pantry at my mom's house)

  • NO.

I was at the cottage a couple of years back.  For an irrelevant reason I pulled a box of, ironically, lasagne noodles from the back of the not-to-code anymore lazy susan.  It had no nutrition label on it.  Must have been back there since the 80s.

You never know what treasures some cottages hold.

promised myself I'd retire when I turned gold, and yet here I am

  • No. They are probably safe to eat, but I would think they might not cook right, or taste as good.

  • Nope!  If they expired sometime in 2012, I wouldn't think twice about it but 2008 is a stretch, even for me!

  • Heck no! That is almost 5 years past exp date!

    No.

We have a Freebie Bin at work.  I have a coworker who puts old asss expired food in it.  Hey jackarse, if you don't want expired food then neither do we.

    That's so weird.

  • I too am fairly lax on expiration dates... and something like lasagna noodles, whateve. But 2008 is quite a bit out of date, so even I would toss them.

Also agree with other poster, they are probably safe to eat, but I'd imagine the quality is poor after so many years

  • I'm lax with dates, particularly for non-perishable things like dried noodles.  If the choice was eat them or jump off a bridge, I'd probably eat them.  But if the choice was eat them or go to the store and buy a fresher box, I'd toss 'em and go to the store.

I also agree with PPs that I wouldn't worry about getting sick if I ate them, but that they were poor quality or decreased nutrition.

  • I cooked macaroni once and after it was boiling i saw like maggots or worms or something floating...........then i looked at the expiration date and it was like 2 years expired.................so good chance the lasagna would be buggy

This is my thought too. I'm sure they're fine, safety wise.
