Cloth Diapering

Anyone try/use disposable inserts?

If you have any recommendations as to what brand to try or not try let me know!

As I said in a previous post, I live in the desert so water use is a big issue and we've decided to balance our CD use with other options. When you pay attention to the water, CD actually use a ton! Not a big deal back in Minnesota maybe, but here in AZ that's a problem. We have a high efficiency washer which uses less water, but the woman at the CD store told me to add a wet beach towel to the load to get more water in!!!  So far I haven't and the diapers are getting clean just fine. I wish we could afford a grey water recycling system!

Also, my husband and I both work full time and sometimes the laundry gets done twice a week instead of every other day.  For these reasons and 100 more we have been using biodegradables. I am happy with this.

But, I'd like to try a disposable insert.  We have some g diaper inserts but I haven't tried them yet.  I didn't realize until tonight that I might be able to use them with the CD covers I already have. (We use prefolds). I am a little anxious because LO has VERY leaky poo! We recently switched to a hypo-allergenic formula because of eczema and constipation.  Well, both are cured but now she poops liquid. I kinda miss the constipation actually... lol! I guess I'll make sure to try them with a well gusseted cover. We have bummies and bumgenious and rumparooz.

Re: Anyone try/use disposable inserts?

  • I've used the GroVia disposable inserts when we were traveling. They don't do a great job of holding in runny poo, but I think this will be less of an issue as DS gets more into solids.

Since you live in the desert, maybe you can save energy by line drying your diapers?

  • My mom created her own water conservation system by having her washer drain into a big plastic barrel. I think she just caught the rinse water and then used that for washing her next load. I can't remember exactly how she did it, but it saved tons of water and still got the clothes clean.

Sorry, I don't have any experience with disposable inserts.

  • I've only used gDiaper inserts and I find they work great! They would absorb the watery part of her poop but they may not contain the other parts, but I think this would depend on the cover that you are using. I've used them with gDiapers and Flip covers so far and they have worked well, but some poop does get on the cover. They may seem long at first but you have to slide them in and stretch the cover to get them in (how gDiapers recommends to put them in).

From what I've read they are more absorbent than Flip disposable inserts.

  • I have used the Flip disposable inserts when traveling. They lay in the cover similar to a trifolded prefold, so not much poo catching power. They held a good amount of pee without getting stinky. A friend uses grovias sometimes and showed me one of those inserts. It looks like it would hold runny poo better due to the gussets, but it's also pricier.

  • I also live in AZ. I've used flats and a camping style washer to hand wash them to save on water but where I live now, higher in elevation with a milder climate it's not an issue at all.
  • Thanks everyone! I think I'll try the gdiaper inserts of course because I already have them and grovia second because of the gussets!
