Update: Not willing to bear weight on one leg!

After I got Nate dressed and put him down from the changing table he sort of tripped on his right shoe and fell. I helped him up and he tripped again so I took off his shoes, thinking that maybe it was time to get a new pair. He was taking steps really slow and it looks like he was uncomfortable on the right leg.

I gave him breakfast and let him sit for another 45 minutes and got him up again, this time w/o any pant or socks to see if there was any swelling. One leg looks a bit swollen at the knee, but it is the opposite leg that he was tripping over and unwilling to walk on earlier.

I've called the pedi and of course got the answering service. His ortho is probably closed today as well. I have felt up and down both legs and get no reaction from him. My question is: should I give him some ibuprofen and see if that changes his ability to walk? Or would that be bad if the on call pedi tells me to take him to the ER....ugh I googled and got leukemia and tethered cord as reasons.....

UPDATE: Over the time frame of about 4 hours Nate went from not willing to stay standing and wimpering, to walking with a limp, and then finally to looking like his old self again. I think maybe he slept on the leg wrong and it fell asleep. He likes to sleep in the fetal position on his tummy with his hands tucked under him when he is cold at night.

I had to laugh to myself when the on-call pedi (has no idea of Nate's issues) called me around noon. He said it could either be a fracture "you know how those little ones are when get get running and jumping around...they can sometimes overdo it and break something"...Ummm No. The other option he gave was lyme disease.

I was really tempted to be a smart ass and say "Would your answer change at all if I told you he has a deletion on chromosome 1 that is associated with tethered cord?" I just didn't bother going there, because by that time Nate seemed to be walking better. I will be giving his gait the stink-eye though until we see the dev pedi in April. If it still is a bit off then I may ask for a better tethered cord MRI screening than we got two years ago.

Thanks everyone for all your support! I was still feeling a bit fragile after the speech dx and the leg issue was pushing me over the edge. :)

  • If he doesn't seem to be in pain I would hold off on the Ibuprofen until you can get him in to the pedi.

Has he been sick recently?  My ODS had something similar happen and it turns out it was a virus that settled in the hip joint. Synovitis I think? He couldn't walk at ALL and did not seem to be in any pain.  Like you I was freaking out after googling.  It lasted about 36 hours then it was gone.

However, its def best to get into the docs on this one.  Keep us posted!

  • I would be hesitant to go to the er with the flu going around.  I would give Advil and see what happens. A lot of times we either sleep funny or stub a toe and it bugs us and we don't walk balanced.  Give him some time to rest and see what happens.
To my boys:  I will love you for you Not for what you have done or what you will become I will love you for you I will give you the love The love that you never knew
