High-Risk Pregnancy

High BP but no protein? NBD?

So I usually hover around 100/60 for BP but last week was 144/75. The doctor I saw said he thought it was probably a fluke and my urine was fine so he wasn't worried. He said it's unlikely to develop pre-e with a second pg without getting it the first time (although my first DD was born at 36 weeks so I never made it this far.)

I had my next appointment yesterday and my urine was fine and BP was  140/70. I mentioned it but the dr didn't really say anything so I figured it was NBD.

Now, of course, having a night to mull it over I'm wondering if I should have pushed a little harder. Is it NBD to have suddenly higher BP as long as everything else seems fine? I also gained about 4lb in the past week (I assume water.)

Any thoughts? Just cut down on salt and drink more water???

Re: High BP but no protein? NBD?

  • I had pree with DD1, I didn't have the protein in my urine. But at the literal last minute I got told it was pree after every symptom in the book was there except protein for 10 weeks. Now I am going back in the same boat again with DD2.

I would suggest just relaxing ,talk to your doctor about a medication adjustment. Don't freak, but if you have to push the subject with your doctor.

  • I remember my OB being concerned if my BP got up to 145/95 (that when they wanted me to head to L&D). I know that by the end of the pregnancy that pressure do tend to be higher.

I would keep on drinking lots of water and cut down on the salt and put your feet up as much as possible.

  • Thanks ladies. I may ask a neighbor who is a doctor to take my BP tomorrow or the next day. I guess what made me most nervous is that the doctor seemed to mainly think it wasn't a problem because I didn't develop pre-e last time, BUT last time I didn't make it past 36 weeks and this time my BP first went up at 36 weeks so who's to say that I wasn't heading there last time KWIM?
  • I had high BP with no protein starting at 36 weeks with my son.  It started just like yours, with readings around 140 over 70, and then they started creeping up from there.  My doctor sent me to L&D for monitoring as soon as my top number hit 140.  After a few hours of constant BP monitoring (while resting), they were able to tell whether the reading was just a fluke or whether it is sustained.  The MFM doctors at L&D also did blood work, and confirmed that I had abnormal liver enzymes.  After that, they sent me for a 24 hour urine test to be sure that I wasn't spilling protein throughout the day (my numbers came back within normal range).  Based on all of the results, they determined that I did not have pre-e (yet anyway) but ordered bi-weekly BP monitoring and NSTs to make sure that everything was ok.  When my BP shot up at 39 weeks, they were able to catch it pretty quickly and induce me right away.

It could very well be a fluke, or it could not be.  I wouldn't get overly stressed about it, but I would ask my doctor for additional monitoring to be sure.  Better to be safe than sorry with BP in pregnancy, in my opinion.

Thank you so much for your response. My ears have been stuffed all afternoon (buzzing and feeling clogged) and Dr. Google says that this can also be a sign of high BP so I may call their nurses line this afternoon.

  • I wound up being induced due to the very beginning of pre-e at 37w 2d.  My numbers went from being normal to being around 140ish/90ish.  I was in L&D twice and the 3rd time was when they admitted me.

Definitely be proactive.  If you feel it's a problem but your doctor isn't reacting how you want, push hard.  High blood pressure is not somthing to mess with! GL!

  • definitely advocate for yourself.  pre-e can come on very quickly.  I was fine all pregnancy, then at my 37wk appt, I was 140/90 and was sent to the hospital immediately for monitoring.  urine and bloodwork both came back positive and my pressure began to skyrocket.

  • I just got put on bed rest yesterday after getting out of the hospital, where I was monitored overnight and had tons of testing done.  My day on Thurs started with a headache and blurred vision, and just not feeling well.  After an hour and a half at work, I decided to get my BP checked by one of the nurses there....it was 150/90....(I usually run in the 115/70 range, so this was shocking to me!)  Long story short, I had all of the testing done and everything came back negative.  While lying around in the hospital, over the course of the day my BP made its way back down to my normal numbers.

I am just confused about all of this....I am 37wks 1day, and have a sched c-section at 39 weeks (only 13 days away).  I'm really nervous that something was missed....I'd rather have this baby out a tiny bit early than see something serious happen.  It's interesting to hear that some of you had pre-e even without protein showing in the 24 hour urine, and now you have me thinking that could be the case with me......

I will definitely be asking some more questions at my next appt on Monday.....
