Waking up unhappy

Am I the only one with a child that wakes up really pissed off? As soon as he wakes up, he crawls to the end of his crib closest to his bedroom door and starts screaming. It takes a few minutes to calm him down after we pick him up. I long for the day that I open his bedroom door and see him smiling!

  • J often wakes up grumpy, too. But, then again, so do I!

    True! Waking up sucks.

  • Jackson does the same. I'm so not a morning person and DH says he got that trait from me.

  • Yup, more often than not Allison wakes up crying.  She has recently started to wake up singing, but it is RARE.

  • The only time Maddy wakes up crying is if she's not ready to get up yet. I give her a bottle and a diaper change and back to bed she goes, usually for an hour or two. Maybe try that?

This is my daughter exactly.  After she goes back down the next time she wakes up she's happy talking to herself in there.

  • DS is only unhappy because he is ready to play and I never move quickly enough.  Seriously hoping he someday is one of those kids who will talk to himself in his crib, etc.

  • When Owen wakes up grumpy, he's usually still tired so I'll leave him in there and sometimes he'll fall back to sleep. But sometimes, he's just a grump and he gets over it eventually.

  • Addy does this most days after her 2nd nap. Strangely it's usually just then and not at other times.

  • Landon went through about a month where he would wake up happy and babbling. Now, though, he usually wakes up whining. He can't sit himself up or crawl so I think he is probably just bored in his crib. I long for some mobility!

This! I can always tell when when he isn't ready to get up so I get him to go back to sleep.

This is us too, for both kids.  Crying = not ready to be up.

  • Connor wakes up mad too. Even if he slept a good long time, he needs 5-10 minutes to get it together. I wish he would wake up happy and chatting, but that isn't dh or my personality, so I guess its not in the cards for us.

  • If it's morning and he slept well, then he wakes up happy and will sometimes play for a few minutes before I have to go get him. Any other time (almost every nap, some mornings, and always in the MOTN), yes, he immediately starts to scream upon waking. He hasn't always done that, it started along with everything else (separation anxiety, etc.). He almost sounds more panicked though than pissed. I hope it's a phase.

His crib is also next to the door and he'll reach out and open the door and scream down the hallway for us. It's the only place we can put it in this house but I've already told my husband we will NEVER put a crib next to a doorway again. I feel like he might be more likely to go back to sleep if he couldn't get to the door. Maybe not though.

    That's pretty funny.

  • Like PPs, Lucia only wakes up unhappy if she's not gotten enough sleep. We leave her be to see if she'll go back to sleep, and if not then she's usually a grump until the next nap.

  • If DD gets to sleep until she wakes up on her own, I get a happy, smiley baby in the morning. However, because we leave the house 2 hours before she would wake up on her own, I am dragging her out of bed 2.5 hours before she's ready. She always cries and fights with me about waking up. It's horrible and I always feel really bad.

  • Yes, there is a 100% chance DD will wake up crying. She cries before her eyes even open. She may still be tired but I have NEVER managed to get her to go back to sleep.
