February 2012 Moms

Dairy :-/

Okay moms,

I haven't posted more than twice since I had Ava. Teaching and being a mom has overwhelmed me! I need advice on introducing dairy. When Ava was around 9 months, I decided to try some Gerber yogurt with her. She has been on normal milk-based formula so I wasn't too worried. I was a bit of a dumb first time mom and gave her an entire cup the first day and a half cup the day after. She'd been a little off the first day and even had a weird gagging moment several hours later but I stupidly didn't make the connection. So I gave her yogurt that second day too.  She got fussier as the day went on and so before bed, I tried to give her some Tylenol because she was slightly warm and seemed so bothered by something. Well the gross taste of the Tylenol acted as the catalyst and she started violently vomiting and didn't stop until her little body was totally empty maybe 10/15 minutes later. She slept peacefully that night and was fine the next day. So it seems pretty clear that was the yogurt.

After the reaction, I'm terrified to try dairy again. Obviously I will do it more gradually but is she allergic or intolerant or was it just because I started her on way too much at a slightly young age? I tried about 1.5 tablespoons of tiny pieces of Colby jack cheese this weekend just one day and didn't see any negative reactions but I'm not sure that was enough to assess how she handles dairy now. I sooooo want to avoid making my baby that miserable and sick again.

Any input or advice? Do you think she'll be okay now that she's older (11 months now) and if so, how do I introduce dairy and which kinds first?

  • I'd say that the vomitting could've just been a fluke, but would be leary too if it had happened to me.  And I'd say it would be an intolerance as opposed to an allergy...allergy would more than likely bring on hives, swelling, trouble breathing, those kinds of things (I just looked up that last night, researching milk intolerance myself).  Try a little bit of yogurt again.  If you're giving the Gerber baby yogurt, give maybe 1/4 of the container at breakfast.  Then the same the next day.  Up it a little bit the 3rd day, and up it again maybe the 4th day.  That's enough, 4 days in a row, to see if she'll 'react' to it.  Don't give her anything else "odd" those days so you'll know for sure that the reaction would be from the yogurt.  If you don't want to try yogurt again, just up the amount of cheese to see if there's a reaction from that.

  • Nat reacted to dairy and I started yogurt by giving just a couple spoonfuls everyday. Eventually I increased it but she doesn't eat more than half a cup.

  • I would definitely ask your doctor.  Just because she had a bad reaction to yogurt doesn't automatically mean she has a dairy allergy.  Maybe she's allergic to another ingredient.  Since it was two days in a row, maybe it was a bit of a stomach bug or virus (especially since she felt warm).  I just wouldn't automatically go to "dairy allergy" but I would definitely bring it up with your pediatrician and get their advice on how to proceed.  I would personally call and speak with them so you can try to get a better idea of where you stand before her 1 year appointment since you'll likely be able to start WCM then.

  • The second time Lucia ate yogurt she had kind of a bad reaction. She got all gassy, clearly her stomach hurt, etc. She had eaten cheese before that. We just waited a couple days, then tried again with a smaller amount. She had no problem, and since then eats yogurt for breakfast 4 or 5 times a week eith no issues. I figure it was either a fluke or she just needed to get used to it. I would try again if I were you.
