Question for tummy sleepers

Apparently, I have a tummy sleeper.

Over the weekend I posted about having trouble getting LO to sleep in her crib. She's been in her swing for several weeks. So we had a REALLY rough few nights, but I was determined to stick with it. Last night she cried and fussed and I was back and forth with her for over an hour. Finally I decided to try laying her down on her side. She immediately rolled onto her belly, rolled her head to the side and fell asleep. I left her for a few minutes and then gently put her back on her back. I went to the bathroom, came out and looked at the monitor, and she was back on her tummy.

So of course I was nervous and up half the night checking on her, even though she can roll over and does have really great neck strength. She slept for almost 11 hours, with one wake-up for a bottle at her normal time - 2:30am.

So my question is, if you have a tummy sleeper, do you put them down on their tummy, or put them on their back and let them roll over on their own? And do you do the same for naps?

Re: Question for tummy sleepers

  • Hunter is still in the RnP at night, and I lie him on his side, alternating each night.  But, during the day he naps on his belly and takes pretty decent naps.  He still isn't rolling over, so I don't know if he prefers his belly yet.  I plan on very soon transitioning him to his crib at night, and will probably begin with tummy sleeping.

  • We put them down with a bottle. If they are still awake after they are done eating we flip them to their stomachs. Jason will sleep a good 7 hours or so straight most nights this way. Braidon still wakes up about 2 times but way better than the 6 he would if we left on his back. If he's on his back he has to be swaddled and we're trying to get away from that.

For naps we just automatically put them on their tummy. They usually are knocked out with in a few minutes.

  • I put W on his belly for naps and on his back at night. He's rolling now and pretty much rolls onto his belly as soon as I put him down. When we first put him in the crib I was up all night checking in him, but it gets better!

  • I put DD on her belly for both naps and nightime. She isn't rolling over yet but I have the angelcare monitor which gives me peace of mind. She has great neck strength also.

  • I've been told to always place on the back. They'll find their way to the belly if it's what they want.
When she was younger, I would place her on her belly sometimes, though.

  • I put her on her back and she's on her tummy by the time I pick up the video monitor off the base in our room.

She naps in the RNP and I now have to strap her inbecause she tries to roll over in it.

ETA: We have a movement monitor that she sleeps on, it helps calm my nerves about it.

  • We put DD down on her tummy for both naps and regular bedtime.  She won't sleep any other way.

  • I put Dexter in his bed on his tummy. He falls asleep in my arms and I just lay him gently down on his tummy. For naps he can do either. Depends on where he falls asleep. :
