High-Risk Pregnancy

Advair for asthma?

Hello! I am a newbie here and I am not sure if this post belongs here, so apologies if this question needs to be directed to a different board.  I am six weeks pregnant today, and I have asthma. My normal regimen is to take Advair (a class C drug) 100/50 once-twice a day and an albuterol inhaler (also class C) when need be. When I got my bfp a few weeks ago, I switched to Pulmicort (which is a class B drug and had been prescribed time during my last pregnancy which unfortunately ended in a m/c) in place of the Advair. Now my asthma is out of control and I am using the albuterol countless times per day. I talked to my ob, and he said to go back to taking the Advair. I am wondering if anyone here has experience taking Advair during pregnancy and if so, was your baby okay? Were there any complications? Thanks!

Re: Advair for asthma?

  • The way it was explained to me and DH (who is super over protective) is this: it is safer for you and baby to be on a Class C medication that works then a Class B one that doesn't. The most important thing is for you to be able to breath. I don't take Advair but both of my asthma meds are Class C. I take albuterol and Qvar. That being said, let your OB know your concerns and ask to see someone who specializes in asthma and pregnancy. I know it is hard and we want the best for our LOs and sometimes what is best for them is taking care of ourselves first, even if it means a class C medication instead of class B like we wish.

  • Hi! I was on Advair from 16 weeks for my last pregnancy with DD and she was just fine :) This time, my ob did try to take me off of Advair when I got my BFP but within 2 weeks I had gotten a bad URI and my asthma was out of control. I went back on Advair and I am doing really well. The overall opinion I have gotten from my ob and my primary is that it is more important for me to breathe than to worry about possible side effects to the baby. If I am not getting enough oxygen, neither is the babe :)
  • It is very reassuring to hear your stories. Thank you so much for sharing! Smile
  • I was on Advair (which I loved) and was switched to pulmacort in the beginning of my pregnancy too. I find the pulmacort doesn't work as well as the Advair did and I was having bad asthma problems for awhile too! I started seeing a chiropractor on a weekly basis due to throwing my back out, and ever since then, my asthma has improved significantly. I know this wasn't your question, but thought I would share my experience because it may be worth looking into for you too.
