Any recs on really good room darkening shades?

I'm asking actually for myself, I work some nights and have trouble sleeping during the day. I have a nice quiet room but keep waking up because of the light. Currently we have tin-foiled the windows (the room faces our back yard so no one but us can see the tacky-ness). This has worked great and I sleep much better, but this is a temporary solution and I'd like to find a way to black out the windows in a more aesthetically pleasing way ;) For our boys room we have the Eclipse curtains and the pull down shade from Home Depot, but it still lets in quite a bit of light around the edges and I'm looking for something better for my sleep room. Anyone use anything that completely blacks out windows?

  • We have blackout honeycomb shades from Hunter Douglas.  They're awesome, BUT if your window opening isn't perfect nothing you get will block out all of the light.  Unfortunately our master bedroom window opening isn't the same all the way down so we have light bleed on the sides.

  • How about just an eye mask?

  • We have Levolor from Lowes and they are great.  There are two versions, light darkening and forget the other but you obviously want that one.

  • I got this for DS, since he is so alert he needed a really dark room to take his naps.

I didn't want to spend a lot of money and this actually works pretty well.

Or like PP an eye mas might be a good solution too.

  • I do use an eye mask but it slips up or light creeps etc. I know I sound kind of whiny but I sleep so much better in a dark room. After several years of bad daytime sleep and chronic sleep deprivation I'm ready to just figure it out.

Thanks for all the replies! Going to research some of those.

  • I made some DIY ones. I went to the fabric store and bought the thick upholstry vinyl, cut them to the shape and size of my windows, and put them up with velcro sticky dots. I did the upper and lower pane separate so that I can take just half down if I want only a little light to shine in.

    Good idea!
