Mold in Rubber Ducks...PSA

I'm going to get on my soap box for just a minute on this issue.  I've seen posted here before about mold being in rubber ducks that are used in the bath tub.  I've also seen the suggestion that gluing the hole shut is a solution for keeping the water out.  I agree with that gluing the hole shut may keep the water out. 

Here's my issue though.  I just saw something posted on FB (not the 212 group) about how to get rid of the mold in these toys.  It came up time and time again to bleach and clean with vinegar.  Let me tell you all that this WILL NOT get rid of the mold.  I repeat, IT WILL NOT GET RID OF THE MOLD!  It's very common "WRONG" information that mold will be killed with bleach.  I worked for a cleaning and restoration company for quite a few years.  One of the biggest things that we did was mold remediation.  We had to be certified by the State to do this kind of work and it required CE classes to keep the certification, so it wasn't something that the company just up and "did".  Granted some mold/mildew in some bath ducks does not constitute mold remediation.  However, the same concept applies.  The only true way to get rid of mold is to get rid of the source!  This means...if you're afraid that there's mold in your bath toys, get rid of them!  Mold needs dampness, darkness, and something porous to feed on and only take 48 hours to start growing.

So, please, please, please, do not clean things, that you suspect of being moldy, with bleach and think all is ok.  There are a million different kinds of mold and they all effect different people in different ways.  If you're concerned enough about it to glue the holes shut, then please be concerned enough to get new ones before you just glue them.  I'm not trying to be a know it all, and I'm not trying to scare anyone regarding mold.  However, it's apparently an issue because I've seen it 'here' before and I just wanted to put my 2 cents in on the issue.

    We just threw away one of our rubber ducks for this reason.  We got it from my sister in law as a hand-me down and the last time I squeezed it out, gunk came out- EWW!  He's got plenty of brand-new bath toys.

    I have recommended an overnight vinegar soak on here before, but it was intended as a preventative measure rather than a solution for killing existing mold. Kind of like, one of the things I use to clean my shower is vinegar; not because the shower is moldy, but to hopefully prevent that from ever happening. I don't know what advice was being given on that FB thread, but hopefully mine was never misinterpreted :]

    Jessica, it wasn't you. It was actually a comment made by another friend on someone's page...and I never even saw her comment, lol, because there were too many other posts. I just put this message up because I know people think that bleach is the cure all when in reality it's not. And if people are concerned enough to go through the trouble of gluing the holes then I just wanted to put my 2 cents on the mold issue itself.
