Anyone know if you have GD...

Do you have to have a C-section? TIA!

Re: Anyone know if you have GD...

  • Nope...

If you have GD and you manage it well, the goal is to have a "normal" sized baby. Even if you manage it well, though, your baby could still be large (according to my doctor).

I'm 37+ weeks and we haven't talked about a c-section. I get a sizing ultrasound next week, but based on my measurements my doctor thinks the baby is not too big. My best friend had GD and had a natural birth (no drugs), so its definitely possible.

They don't like to let you go much past your due date, due to placenta deterioration, so you may need to be induced and my doctor believes inducing too early can lead to c-sections. So, in my case, he's not inducing until at least my due date.

  • I go back tomorrow for the 3 hour test.  But I have been reading about it a lot and people with GD usually end up giving birth to a big baby (9 lbs.+) so bc of that, they usually do C-sections.  So I guess it just depends on the mother's condition and the size of the baby.

Do you know what your levels/number was?

The two levels in the middle were 200-something... Since then, however, I have been monitoring my blood sugar and have managed to keep it down under the suggested amount.

  • Thanks.  I was just curious bc when I was reading online, most sites said anything < or equal to 140 was considered normal.  My levels were at 138, so I am trying not to be too concerned.
  • Nope, I had it with my DD and had a vag delivery. She was only 7 lbs 6 oz. As long as you keep it controlled the baby will be a normal size.

  • I have yet to update my ticker or post a birth story, but I just gave birth on Thursday to DD #2 and it was a vaginal delivery. ?She was only 7 lbs 4 oz and we had no complications from the GD. ?Just stick to your diet it really pays off!
  • i was just diagnosed with GD on friday and have been wondering the same thing.  i meet with the nutritionist this week and the nurse educator next week to begin monitoring my levels after starting the diet.  i have heard though that managing it with diet can lead to a vaginal delivery and not increase the need for a c-section.

anyone have any advice on the diet?  my biggest worry is going to be how to manage breakfast since i leave for work so early in the morning and generally can't eat breakfast until i'm there due to needing to wait an hour after taking thyroid medication before eating.

  • I have GD- my only number NOT controlled by diet is my fasting and they are now fine with insulin. So it has been pretty much under control, yet the baby is measuring in the 90th percentile! (6.7lb at 34 weeks) My doc says if it continues this way, we will most likely do a C/S because the shoulders of a GD baby can be very large and get stuck.

But every Dr has a different philosophy!
