Tell me about Clomid for men

Appointment with the urologist went well! He wasn't nearly as "doom and gloom" as previous doctors have been, which made DH extremely happy =) He's prescribed a 6 month regimen of Clomid (25mg every other day) for DH, and a re-draw of his hormones and another SA in 3 months. He's said that there's not likely anything that can be done about the antibodies (he believes the risks of prednisone outweigh the possible benefits) but that the Clomid might be able to bring his numbers up to the point where the antibodies might not make as much of an impact.

I know what it does and how it works, but what was your experience with it? Side effects? (Not looking for "success" stories, just what your/DHs experience with it was.) Does it make men as moody as it does women? (I'm terrified of this. DH is one moody mo-fo as it is! Likely in part because of the low T, but who knows?) I hate the waiting. I'm grateful that this is a possible treatment for him, but I'm also realistic. Last time we did treatments (not with Clomid) his numbers went down drastically and have continued to decline. It crushed DH, and I'd hate to see what another 6 months of pills will do to him if there's a negative outcome.

Anyways, that was kind of ranty and "poor me". (Sorry!) What I really wanted was personal experiences with Clomid for men. How did your DH feel on it? Did he have any side effects?

  • DH has been taking Clomid a while and I don't notice any side effects. I don't think he's moody or anything.

  • DH loved Clomid. He thought it made his muscles more defined. ;) I also think it made him less moody. Unfortunately, Clomid didn't work for us. After 3 months, minor improvements, but it lowered his count. After 6 months, he only had 11 mil sperm and only 1.5 mil were normal. Since he's been off Clomid, his last count was 72 mil, motility was 55%, but his morph is still 1%.

I hope you have better results than we did.

  • Hey there! Hubbs has been on Clomid since beginning of Oct. and he has been fine. No mood swings, or anything. He had very low T and low #'s across the board. He is 50mg every other day, and he produces more sperm which is what RE wanted. We have to do IVF with ICSI. They will be able to tell in 3 months if helping etc. In our case it is. <3 Best of luck

  • I wish I had a clomid success story for you, but I don't. DH was on Clomid through our first IVF cycle. It made him moody and didn't increase his count at all. It works for some, but not all men.

He did start Accupuncture with an acupuncturist that specializes in fertility. His count went up from 7 to 3 million. He stopped clomid after IVF 1. Yesterday, for IVF 2, his count was just as high. Again, it may not work for everyone, but it worked for DH!

    ***sig warning***

DH was also put on 25mg of Clomid every other day, after a zero sample the day we were supposed to have an IUI.  He had SA's prior to that which had sperm, which was odd.  About a month after going on Clomid, his numbers raised to lower-end normal - about 15 million instead of the "normal" 20 million.  More than enough to use for an IVF with ICSI. He produced another sample the day of the IVF ER, but we never got the numbers. We only know that it good to use for that cycle and that we didn't need the frozen sample.

The only side-effect DH noticed since getting on Clomid has been an increased sex drive. Where he used to be happy enough going once a week, now he'll want it many times a week - and that's just fine by me! :)

Side note - DH's urologist said the Clomid helps about 1 in 3 men raise their sperm counts and that an increased sex drive was one of the more common side effects.

Yet another bonus! This is something I hoped would be the case for us. I'm pretty sure DH should be on testosterone supplements, so if the Clomid can increase his T, then that might take care of that issue as well?

Thanks! TCM and acupuncture was our first attempt at treatment (since our RE and the first urologist both said that there wasn't anything they could do) and it didn't work for us unfortunately. (It did wonders for *my* cycles though!) Glad it worked for your DH! FX for you this cycle!!!

  • SAIF response sorry I'm on my phone and can't see siggys to tell if its welcome or not.

My DH was on clomid to conceive our first through iui and we did on our second iui after the count increased. He also has low T. He hasn't ha any noticeable side effects. But the dosage seems weird. It seems most guys are taking 25 mghalf a pill everyday. Or 50mg every other day a whole pill. But you said your DH is taking 25 mg every other day, so I would double check the dosage just to make sure you are not wasting your time. I hope you get the results you need!

  • MH has been on clomid for 4 months now.  His instructions are to take 25mg everyday.    K is a big guy, tall and heavy.   He is being treated for low T although every other RE we met felt based on all his numbers his T was normal for him.  We then found this RE that thought we should give clomid a chance.  K's count went from 6 mil to 16mil.  Motility increased from 22% to 60%.  Morph remained the same at 2%.

Not sure this is a side effect from the medication or because he started the meds when it turned cold but he has gained weight.    For the last month or so he has been working out which usually results in some weight loss, not this time.  We are also noticing that he is breaking out (face & back), which was never a problem before.  Other then that his mood hasn't changed, his energy level remains the same.  He recently cut the clomid back to 25mg every other day. We'll see if that makes a difference.
