Amoxicillin not working...onto the next drug. Any advice?

Hi Ladies!

LO has had an ear infection (his third in the past five months) for 5 days now, the Amoxicillin is not working, so the pediatrician switched us to a combo version (Amox-Clavulanic Acid, or Augmentin) this afternoon.

Do any of you have experience with giving your LO this med? He is starting it tonight, but since he has not had a fever all day and is over his cold, I plan on putting him into DC tomorrow. I'm concerned about side effects not showing up until he's at DC.

Any advice would be much appreciated.TIA

  • If he is fine with amoxicillin he should be fine with Augmentin. I wouldn't worry about it. There is always the chance for an allergic reaction and any antibiotic can cause a little bit of diarrhea, but Augmentin shouldn't be any different than amoxicilin in that realm.

All of this.  Augmentin is a stronger version on amoxicillin.  DD was on it a few weeks ago for the same issue and she ended up with lots of blowouts but no other side-effects.

  • Amox didn't work for ds and he took the amox/klav. For some reason, he fought taking this medicine so we'd give it to him with a spoonful of food. Then he did fine. It did cause some loose stools.

  • I cannot thank you enough for your responses. You gave me some peace of mind during what might have been a sleepless night. I don't know why I was so worried...I guess I took what the ped and pharmacist said a little too seriously.

  • It could also be viral, which would explain why the antibiotics aren't working. Ds has had a few of these, and unfortunately, we just had to let them run their course, with tylenol to manage pain and fever.

  • Agreed on the loose stools, and it has also caused some yeast infection-like rashes in J... I guess when kids are on antibiotics it messes with how their bodies fight bacteria... had to go back to the doc to get some prescription cream as well. The fun never ends...
  • I hope your night went well. My LO has had numerous types of antibiotics, and Augmentin was the worst for him. He didn't have an allergic reaction, but it gave him horrible diarrhea, cramps and vomiting. We ended up halving his doses because he was sicker on it than not. He just had his 4th ear infection since September, so they put him on the antibiotic that comes in a shot (1 in each leg each day for 3 days). We spent half of our weekend at the doctor's office waiting 20 minutes for the shot to warm up, getting it, and waiting 15 more minutes to watch for a reaction, followed by 10 more minutes for the nurse to discharge us in addition to the normal doctor's office waiting time. His infection seems to be finally gone though, and he's sleeping better than EVER. I hope your little guy gets over his quickly!
