Talk to me about mini-vans...

I think part of me just died - I used to be a self professed van hater. But we just took an overnight trip in my car, and it really didn't work. I just want us to be comfortable, and not have to play pack-the-car-jenga every time we go somewhere. And we haven't even tried to take a stroller anywhere!

I currently have a Dodge caliber. DH is 6'6, I am 5'10. Add one car seat and all the stuff you need to travel with two people and a baby, and we were uncomfortable. We also have a 60 pound boxer with plans to get another one someday. We also plan on having more kids.

What kind do you drive? What do you love/hate about yours?

  • I guess it would depend on how often you travel, when you are going to have more kids and get another dog.  If all those are in the near future, then I don't see why not.

I have a Honda Odyssey and love it.  It's plenty roomy for the 4 of us plus the two strollers and groceries, etc.  I could see us comfortably taking a trip in this car.

I also want a minivan.  I have the Dodge Journey and yeah... nowhere near big enough.

  • I just wanted to commiserate. I also used to be vocal about my hatred of minivans. Now we have 2 kids and a Mazda3 Hatchback. We went away for 2 nights over Thanksgiving and it was ridiculous how little space we had left and how much we had to leave home that we'd planned on taking.

The Odyssey is our dream van.

Thanks :) I'm working on bumping more, this is an obvious fail.

  • A part of me dies every time DH broaches the minivan subject, so I'll be stalking this post to see if the responses can change my mind. Right now, I'm leaning toward SUV.

We've tried a few SUVs, but with DH's height, he still struggles to find something with enough head room (TWSS?). I used to drive an alero, he had to tilt his head to where the sunroof was. Comical?  Yes. Comfortable? No.

I know, don't worry! I think I actually read the original thread and forgot about it.

  • I just wanted to say that I have a Dodge Caliber, too, and they're so much smaller than they look!

  • We bought a dodge grand caravan when Aidan was born. I love it. Two kids, 85 pound of dog, two cats and us and half a baby store going up to the cottage? No problem!

  • We have been looking at Grand Caravans too.  I like the stow and go option!  We have third row seating in our SUV, but it leaves no trunk space, and DS1 has to crawl over the middle seat to sit back there.

  • I have a Chrysler Pacifica and I love it. We test drove the Mazda CX-9 too and loved it. So if you don't exactly want a mini van but want the space I recommend those. I cringe looking up my pacifica because it says mini van but it doesn't 100% look like one. We have one that has an entertainment system for long road trips to my home in Texas. And we have 3 dogs, my DH is 6'0" and I'm 5'8" and we have more than enough leg room.
  • I think I responded in the linked post, but I love my Chrysler Town and Country.  I always said I'd never own one, but I love it.

Just saw this... sorry!! My DH's uncle swears by the Odyssey and he is very tall. He used to have a job that took him traveling often, to the point he'd put 250k on a van in 2.5 years. He loved it!!!

We got into a wreck 5 weeks before I had DS and Enterprise gave us one to drive until DH got a new truck. It had the third row option and I loved it but we got a better deal on our Pacifica. We may change to the Odyssey depending on how our family grows.
  • We just bought a Toyota Sienna today. Compared to SUVs, it was no contest for us. The SUVs with a third row have less space than a minivan, they cost more, and they (mostly) get worse gas mileage. I don't need a vehicle to go off road, I just need to haul kids and groceries and occasionally take long distance trips and tow a small trailer, all of which the minivan does beautifully.
