I posted last week below about DS1 and how he's in a special ed pre-k program right now--which is perfect for him, but that I wasn't sure what would happen for next year when he's supposed to begin kindergarten. Thank you BTW for all of your great feedback and responses. They were quite helpful.
I did hear back from the teacher and she indicated that as of today, they would probably recommend "developmental" kindergarten which I guess is a full day vs half day (which is somewhat of a pro, except the hours are goofy and not sure what that would do for my job). I guess this program is for those who get taken out of the class for services a little more than others but then won't miss the ciriculum like those who might be in traditional kindy and get taken out for services. Which I guess I "get" in theory only he actually doesn't get taken out all that much (I think OT is just a few minutes a day for him and maybe 1 day of speech).
BUT then they said they aren't sure what district it'll be in. We are in a rural town so if he needs to be bussed to a neighboring town he could be on the bus for an hour (which is what happened for summer school and I vowed to never do that again as he was on the bus for 2 hrs a day!)
Our IEP meeting isn't until end of April and truly, decisions for the program aren't made until May--however the registration for Kindergarten is in MARCH! I feel like I'm so stressed out. You'd think we'd be meeting NOW, right???
I'm such a huge planner so this is driving me nuts.
Re: update (sort of) on the kindergarten reg issue
I feel you on the limbo/planning thing. We have to do kindergarten registration NOW, and DD1's IEP meeting for the fall isn't until March, either!
We called a special meeting in December to reopen her IEP partially for this reason -- she needed her goals updated as well, but it was also an opportunity to at least feel out her team members on their thoughts about kindergarten/elementary. I also dropped in on the SLP and SpEd teacher to talk to them more off-the-record about their thoughts. The school SLP and area admin have been really upfront with me on their perspectives on district programs and resources, and that has been super useful even though I don't know exactly what DD1's IEP is going to look like yet.
So we have a choice enrollment in process where we'd like her to end up, and I'm not even sure when we'll hear back on that. Meanwhile, tomorrow I'll go register her at our home school just to make sure she has a spot somewhere regardless of what happens with our first choice. How much we pay in tuition for kindy is directly related to what goes into her IEP, which is a whole other tangle that it drives me a little crazy not to be able to know for sure about.
The schools go through this process all the time, and talking to the principals and staff at both schools helped me not freak out (as much). It is nerve-wracking for sure, though.

No--because I'm not a SAHM. Last summer he did it because the summer school was in a different dist which was probably about 15-20 min away by car--but because of the bus route took exactly 1 hr (which I guess is the legal max of time a child can be in the bus or something??)
It just sucks because let's say he does this full day program--it goes from 9am to 3:30 pm apparently--and even if it IS in our district, that would mean that he'd probably be picked up 20-30 min earlier on the bus---and so essentially I'd have to take the kids to daycare earlier and pay for daycare for him when he's not really there but a couple hours a day. So as soon as I drop him off he'd be picked up just minutes later and then he'd get off the bus in the PM and only be there like 30 min. BUT DS2 would still need to go to daycare all day --but only a few days a week while I go in to the office.
AND we got his report card on Friday and he's actually meeting or beating EVERY goal they set in his IEP--so that leaves me with another question as to why he'd be in special ed daycare and not traditional for next year. He is behind in speech but really making huge progress--and he has sensory issues which OT is helping him with.
Just a lot of clutter in my mind I guess. It'll all work out.
