Never thought of this but... Moses basket?

I hadn't planned on using anything like a bassinet, but I got a Moses basket and stand as a gift the other day. It's truly precious, but I'm just not sure about using it.

The mattress doesn't seem that firm, and... I don't know exactly. It just seems like it breaks the rules. Of course there's nothing glaring "danger danger" - no ribbons or pillows or hanging fabric sides, but the mattress is a little softer than the crib mattress (enough to flop into a semi-rainbow shape when you lift it), and the sides are fabric-lined (but with open weave mesh, so it's not much different than a crib).

On the one hand, it isn't nearly pillow-like, and it is far from stifling in terms of enclosure. On the other hand, I'd hate to overlook some safety issue in my desire to enjoy a "cute" present. So I'm perfectly happy to use it to store stuffed animals or sort laundry, or if it's safe for some purpose I will definitely put it to work. After all, it's lightweight, easy to move around the upstairs, and, well, completely adorable in the nursery.

What do y'all think? Any experience or cautions? If you are using a Moses basket or soft-sided bassinet, do you mind sharing brand / style / a link so I can compare it to mine? (I don't know who made the one I have so I can't post for a critique, although I could take a picture tonight I suppose...)

Thanks in advance!

Re: Never thought of this but... Moses basket?

  • The purpose is more to let baby sleep wherever you are doing what you need to be doing.  Under that assumption you would be awake and on alert so a softer mattress wouldn't be a hazard.  If you were going to leave the room and/or be sleeping then maybe that particular product would be more dangerous? I don't know for sure...my moses basket is actually the bassinet, it's just removable.

  • I used one with DS for the first month or so.  It worked fine and he's still alive.  However, didn't really love it and won't be using it again with this kid.

  • I had a nurse practitioner that I work with recommend getting one. He is a fan of baby sharing the bed but he said with his kids he put them in the moses basket in the bed so he wouldnt worry about rolling over on them. I think they are safe to use it just depends on if baby likes it or not.
