C-sections

C-section due to Scoliosis?

Is anyone else having a C-section due to having Scoliosis? I have had 3 surgeries and I have 2 titanium rods, 15 screws, and a fusion.

I hate it when people find out and they say, "It just seems like the doctors will do a C-section on anyone these days." So rude. I'm sure if my doctor didn't think this was in my best interest we wouldn't be doing it. I have faith that my doctor knows what he is doing.

Re: C-section due to Scoliosis?

  • I have scoliosis and had a csection 6 months ago. My scoliosis was not corrected like yours, I opted out of the surgery when I was a teenager because I was terrified of it the operation.

When I was preparing for labor I asked if my scoliosis would have any effect and I was told that it wouldn't and lots of women give birth naturally  with the condition.

I went into labor, laboured for 30 hours and NOTHING happened! I got to 2cm and my back was in so much pain. The eppi wouldn't take cause my spine was curved and putting there medicine god knows where... I ended up with a csection 30 hours later and I was told my pelvis leans so far left there was no way a baby would descend into the proper place.

I hear you with all the negative comments about sections etc. Scoliosis did have an effect on my labor and a csection was the only way a baby was going to come out. Trust your instincts and your doctors and congrats on your upcoming baby!

  • Yes - I had a csection due to scoliosis as DS was oblique, with his head into my pelvis, and cld not decend at all.

Due to the curve in my spine bubba had grown into this position  as, being on the diagonal, it was the largest space available. I have a picture taken at 39W 6D and it?s obvious, even from the outside, how he was positioned. And an earlier scan at 38w 5d had already confirmed this. DS was also sunny side up, but I dont think the scoliosis was responsible for that.

My Dr suggested I try to labour naturally in the hope that the stronger contractions would help get the baby into a position to be birthed vaginally, but after 8hrs there was no change at all in his position.

So we went with a csection. DS was a big baby though - big for a girl of my size - he was a whole 2.5lbs bigger than expected. So I?m not sure if we will end up with another CS with this LO, but my Dr and I will decide closer to the time.

    Good luck with your delivery!

  • Hi there, I don not have scoliosis but suffer from extreme hip dysplasia. I had to have a csection because of it as well. I also would get asked why a csection and when I would explain that I could dislocate while pushing people would shut up rather quickly.

  • My mom had extensive surgery to correct scoliosis (rods, etc.) and she was able to have four vaginal births. I opted not to have the surgery and did bracing instead, but still have a pretty good sized s curve. I'm gonna try for a natural birth, but am aware that it might not go as planned. I definitely want to at least try for a vaginal birth.

  • HOLY BATBOY!  Thanks for posting this... I have mild scoliosis, which I don't even know if I ever mentioned to my OB... I did 35 hours of labor and (eventually) had an epi that missed the first 2 times... I had NO IDEA till then that scoliosis could impact your liklihood of a c-section...

Now I'm pregnant with #2 and I wonder if I should lean toward a RCS instead of a VBAC...

I have lots of time to decide, but it's something to think about...
