Should I be concerned?

DS is 6 months and I'm getting a little bit concerned about his speech.  DS does make sounds, but he doesn't do it often and there are days where he doesn't make any sounds at all (except to cry).  I'm a FTM so I thought that was pretty normal until I took him to a play-group yesterday.  We were there for about 2 hours, and every single child made some sound at one point or another, but DS didn't make any sounds, even when he was obviously excited.  He has no hearing issues, recognizes his own name, grabs toys, and can sit unassisted for long periods of time.  He has his 6 months check-up tomorrow so I'm defintely going to bring it up with his doctors, but just wondering what other people's experiences are.

Re: Should I be concerned?

  • My LO doesn't talk much either. He did at around 2-4 months, but then stopped. Now he squeals, blows rasberries, and giggles, but the coo-ing and talking has pretty much stopped.

  • I wouldn't be worried about that at all, especially since you said he was hitting his other milestones. Talk to your pedi about it to ease your mind, though.

  • I wouldn't worry about it. Babies will meet milestones at their own pace - some early, some late.  If he is meeting the other milestones, I wouldn't worry about it yet.  You can ask your doctor if you are concerned, of course.
