Dressing a tiny baby..

This might be silly, but I'm stressed out about dressing the little girl appropriately when she comes. We have a ton of clothes, I just want her to be comfortable.

Like, coming home from the hospital...what are you planning? We have longsleeve nb onesies, or one piece nb pjs with footies, etc. And for the outerwear we have a great comfy/puffy fleece coverall. Do you just layer them up? Will they overheat?

I suppose this is something you just get the hang of as you get to know your baby...right?

Re: Dressing a tiny baby..

  • We always have her in a long-sleeve onesie and footie PJ's. We like the fleece or terry ones because they keep DD warmer. In the car seat we put a blanket over her and zip up her car seat cover. We also always have a hat on her and she stays very warm. You will get the hang of it!

  • It's not silly! I'm a FTM too and I am nervous about under/over dressing my LO! I don't know if I should layer, or not layer...Don't feel bad for asking, I'm glad you did and will be watching this post lol!

But yes...I think we'll just get the hang of it as we go :)

  • The rule of thumb I've always heard is to dress your baby to have one more layer than you would need to be comfortable. We're planning on bringing her home in footie pajamas, a warm hat, and tucked into her car seat with receiving blankets for warmth, depending on how temperatures are that day. At home, probably lots of footie pajamas as well.

  • I have a two piece sweater outfit picked out for DD to come home in. Its warm and comfy looking. I think any of the outfits you listed would work fine. Then I am planning on using one of those cover up things that goes over the car seat with a blanket. In the car I might unwrap her a bit from the layers but most first time parents seem to sit in the back of the car by baby so you can play that by ear :) (I am not sure how us as second time parents are going to do this because there is NO room in the back seat with two car seats. )

  • With DS, I really liked the Bundle Me by J J Cole.  It fits right into an infant car seat and you just zip LO up in it once they're bucked in.  We never had to worry about a coat or anything besides a hat maybe.

  • The best advice....and more than likely this will be your instinct anyway once lo is here...is to dress her how you would be comfortable.  Light layers are a good idea, but there's no need to overdo it.  I work in a peds office and I don't know how many times a day I see a newborn or an infant WAY too bundled up.  If it would cause you to be too warm, she probably is too.  If you're going outside in the freezing cold definatly wrap the blanket and shield her face...but don't then leave her that bundled in a car that the heat is blasting in....babies sweat too! When dd was an infant I would keep her in a short sleeve onsie and then some kind of soft outfit (it was winter so it was mostly long sleeves and pants).

I will also add a little hat, those mittens meant to keep them from scratching themselves, and socks will go a long way to help them regulate their body temp. in that first month or two!

  • The NICU nurse told us one more layer than we would normally wear. We brought Arabella home in a long sleeve onsie and a sleeper from Gymboree. She still fits some preemie and most of her newborn.

  • I'm just taking a long sleeved/one piece sleep and play thing and a hat.  We have a "shower cap" style carseat cover since it's cold out that we used with DS.  Don't put the coverall/bundle me things on baby if they in the carseat.  It's very, very unsafe to have anything "puffy" on when buckled into the carseat.

  • We were told to dress the baby the way you would want to be dressed. If you are hot, they are probably hot. If you are cold...they are. We are packing a warmer weather outfit and a colder weather one (here in MD weather is SO weird). For warmer probably a onesie and sleeper (with a blanket over, if needed), then for colder a onesie with a fleecey outfit over, and a little winter hat (plus blanket).

  • I have always used the one layer warmer than yourself method.  If I'm comfortable in jeans and a long-sleeved shirt, then baby needs two shirts and a blanket.  If I'm comfortable in shorts and a tee, then baby needs long-sleeves and full legs.  This worked with DD#1.  She frequently slept in two fleecy sleepers, or a sleeper and a sleep sack PLUS a onesie when she was a newborn just because our house was cold then and I couldn't get it warmer.
