Babies: 3 - 6 Months

Bumpers?!

We had bumpers on our crib and our little guy would scoot himself over to them even swaddled up.  He liked to smush his head against the bumper, then he would go right back to sleep.  Obviously this concerned us immediately but he mainly pressed his forehead against it.  It seemed as though he wanted to feel like he was close to something and not in the middle of nowhere.  When I spoke to a friend she said I really should not have bumpers in the crib at all.  We took them off two nights ago and now the baby is knocking his face into the wooden bars.  Which is worse?

What do you do?  And won't he just learn not to do this after he feels the hard wood?  I'd rather a bump on the head than the alternative....

Re: Bumpers?!

  • Yeah it's best just to keep them off. I read a horror story about a family waking up to find their baby dead because of bumpers. Even though that might not happen why take the risk. I do wish they could make softer bars though.

  • I'd take them off.

  • The risk with the bumpers is both suffocation and SIDS.  I'd take them off.  It's not worth the risk.

  • I was having this same issue last week. We went and bought breatheable bumpers. They are like mesh so Lucas can breathe right through them when he rolls on his side and is right up against them. He was literally body slamming himself against the wood in his sleep and I had to do something! The real bumper pads terrify me and I doubt I'll ever use them. I love the ones we bought!

Those sound great! Where did you buy them?

  • We had a regular bumper and because of the risk of SIDS we returned it and got a breathable one from Babies R Us. You can probably get one from any store like BRU, BuyBuyBaby, Target, etc. We haven't put it on yet cause my LO hasnt moved much in her crib, but I am happy with the decision we made.

  • I agree with pp, take them off. It's not worth the risk. If you feel like you need something, get the breathable bumpers. Amazon also has them.

  • We had to get breathable ones because L would get her legs stuck in between the bars we got ours at Walmart they were cheapest there i think 22$ i was nervous the first couple times using them but i grew to really like them.

  • Even the breathable ones pose risks. LO's can still suffocate, they can strangle themselves w/ them (they are collapsable so LO's can't stand on them) and are NOT recommended by the american ped. assoc.  I wouldn't use anything on the crib.  LO will figure it out.  They are more resilient then we give them credit for.

  • I thought about using them since LO has also gotten her leg stuck through the bars of the crib, but I put her in a blanket sleeper, and haven't had any problems like that again.  I havent used bumpers since she likes to scoot around in her crib and press her head against the flat bars.

  • He's not strong enough to hit his head hard.

I just barely put a bumper up this last week because we were waking up to his legs hanging out and him crying. We dont use the whole bumper since it's side-carred, but I wouldnt have felt comfortable before he was really strong.

If my baby was pushing his head/face into the bumper on purpose I would take it off.

  • A friend of mine bought pads that just wrapped around each slat with Velcro. It's probably even better than the breathable ones. She got them on the Internet. Don't know where from or what their called.
  • We have the wonder bumpers on our crib and they are fantastic! They are soft, but do not fit in the whole inside of the crib so there is no suffocation risk. They fit around each individual rail. They have worked well for us and I would highly recommend it. They have them at least up at Buy Buy Baby on display, but I think you can only get them online. I know I saw them once on zulily, but you can get them off their website.
