Natural Birth

Home Birth Mamas- WWYD?

I'm feeling a bit overwhelmed here and not sure what to do. So at 28 weeks, my Gestational Diabetes screen came back normal, but in the last few weeks my midwife has noticed sugar in my urine and so she keeps testing my blood sugar levels. Well, on Tuesday it was high. So I've been testing myself yesterday and today and I was high last night and this morning--and I didn't eat any sweets.

Well, anyway I know I can only fire my midwife and get any money back until 36 weeks, which is on Monday. She thinks the baby is already 7lbs. I'm concerned about the extra risks of GD with a home birth. Is it normal to have GD and still have a home birth? I'm wondering if I should fire my midwife now while I can still get most of my money back, rather than ending up in the hospital later anyway and have to pay for both the home birth and the hospital.

Ugh. Feeling very overwhelmed right now. This is a lot to take in at this point in the game andplusalso my husband and I are right in the middle of moving. :( Any advice would be welcome.

Re: Home Birth Mamas- WWYD?

  • Is your MW concerned?

If I were in your shoes I would schedule an ultrasound with a back-up OB to make sure that the baby isn't measuring extremely large.  I would also put myself on the GD diet.

I would still have a HB so long as my MW felt it was safe, the baby wasn't measuring too big (even though those measurements can be off) and I was feeling healthy overall.

This. If you trust your midwife and if she isn't concerned, then I would still have the HB.

  • Does your midwife have a doctor that she works with, either as a formal back-up or just someone she refers people to if they risk out?  Would you feel more at ease if you had the opinion of a physician?

This. GD does have complications and the MW should refer you to an OB for second opinion so you can decide whats right for you from there.
  • Thank you for the responses. I talked with my midwife some more today, and she is not too concerned at this point. She thinks as long as I can keep my blood sugar levels under control, that I should still be able to have a home birth. She is putting me in touch with a dietician who can help me out with that.

And for who asked about whether she works under an OB--she does not. This is because of funky insurance stuff where doctors in California can't get malpractice insurance if they have a midwife under them or something like that. Gross. But I do think she knows some OBs, so maybe I'll ask her about getting a back-up OB.

This is just a lot to process all of a sudden. Thanks again. :)

She thinks the baby is already 7lbs.

Dd measured 6.5 lbs at 35 weeks, and they were worried about her being too big. She was 9 lbs 3 oz when she was born at 41+2. Big, but not huge like they thought, and I had no problems birthing her. Don't let those numbers scare you! Also, I've heard of lots of mamas having home births with GD. Take care of yourself the next few weeks and I don't see why you couldn't have the birth you want.
