Do you shop at KMart?

We have two in our town and there are never more than, like, 10 - 15 cars out front?  For a store of that size (not as big as our Walmarts, but still much bigger than a grocery store), how in the world do they stay in business?

Ours are so crappy, I don't know anyone that shops there anymore.  They are dirty, terrible service, etc.  Does anyone here shop there?  Are the ones in your area doing good business?

H and I drove by one last night and we had a whole discussion about how we can't figure out how they're still in business.

  • The one by us is such a dump but it's always packed. We bought a car seat there once but only because they misprinted the coupon as $56 instead of $156. H is still so proud of that find.

  • Most of the ones near us are closed, but of the two that are still around, one is super dumpy and creepy.  The shelves are frequently bare and it is at the end of a half empty strip mall.  The other one is pretty decent.  It is the only store of it's kind in that area though...mostly residential, and any other major shopping is about 15 mintues away.

  • No, I only know of one in town and it is not close. Every once in a while one of their sales looks good, but I never am motivated enough to drive there. My past experience with the stores is that they are dumps.

  • I think PP is right and the only thing keeping them open is the merger with JCP, but our JCP is kind of a dump too and I always wonder how it stays open.  lol.  So weird.

  • Where I used to live they basically closed them all or they were a dump.  Now where I live they just opened up a new one (it was actually a Sears).  It's really nice and so much less crowded and easier to get in/out of than Walmart.  I would say a good amount go there.  I'm sure this one is really the exception.

  • not since 1992. But my mom always use to get me an icee and popcorn when we walked around (or I sat in basket of cart)

Kmart did have some good icee's & popcorn.

  • I do. It's a dump and the service sucks, but their prices on lotion, cleaners, random crap is always less than target. I have their shop your way rewards card and get points. It is what it is.
  • DH?s first job out of college was an assistant manager at Kmart. It was a terrible job. He worked 60 hour weeks. Most stores were dumps. He said back then they were in danger of going out of business. So I don?t know how they are still around 6-7 years later.

  • No...the ones here are gross and smell. I think they only stayed afloat this long because Sears bought them, but now they are in big financial trouble too, so we'll see how much longer both stores last.
  • I used to shop there when I lived by one.  Ours wasn't crappy or anything.

There isn't one near me anymore and I'm not driving back to where I used to live just to go to K-Mart.

  • We have a SuperK in the town next to us. I avoid that store. I went there trying to find some toy last year and decided to pick up a few groceries. They have a terrible selection and it smells funny in there.

  • Nope, I hate KMart. They have the worst customer service I've ever seen in my life. I will never step foot in one again. I think the last time I was in one was in HS because a friend worked there. I don't think I ever bought anything though.

  • Kmart is the closest store where I am and because of that they do really well, I think they are the fourth highest earning Kmart and there is still hardly ever anywhere there but it's not neary as dirty and deserted as the two where I used to live.
  • I'm pretty sure they are going out of business.  The local one here had signs up yesterday they were closing as of March 1 & everything was on clearance.  I'd be willing to bet that they are all closing too.
  • KMart is awesome if you want to go shopping on a Saturday afternoon and not have to deal with other customers.

  • We have one in town.  We use their parking lot to meetup with friends before we go hiking.  That's because their parking lot is always empty.

I have no clue how they stay in business.  It never even crosses my mind to get something from K-mart...ever.

  • We don't have one here. The one in my hometown is pretty crummy but the one in my sister's town is nice. It's 2 floors, clean, and has a good selection of products.

  • I can't remember the last time...I can only think of one location, and it is not close to me at all.  I'm a Target kind of gal.

  • Ours is rarely crowded. I shopped there for toys at Xmas, and I kept getting $5 coupons to come back, so I did. I thought their prices were good and they had a lot to choose from. I find a good variety of things such as rain boots and flip-flops for the kids.
  • I'm not even sure there's one by us.

  • There is only 1 within like 30 miles of us and it is in our town. It is well-kept but I don't go their often, as I find their prices aren't usually great. That being said, occasionally I score big there. The other day I went in and their sweats for kids were deep discounted. I bought DS a few sizes up--sweatshirts and sweatpants were $1.70 each! Cheap enough I don't care if he ruins them. ;) I also love their Joe Boxer fleece PJs for babies/toddlers. Seriously the best Blanket Sleepers out there. And for some reason (although Sears & KMart are now owned by the same corp) the JB blanket sleepers sold at Sears are different quality.

  • There isn't one in my town so I do not shop there regularly.

Last year, I wanted to buy the LeapFrog Scout puppy for my son for Christmas. KMart had it on sale for something ridiculous like $5.00. I ordered it online and chose the "pick up at store" option (free shipping), because I had an upcoming meeting in a city with a Kmart.

The parking lot was empty. The store smelled like urine when I walked in. It was very dirty and overall a confusing experience. I haven't been back to a Kmart since and don't plan on it. I am very proud of the deal I got, though.

  • I do occasionally.  It is the closest store to my house.  I could walk there in about 5 minutes.  Target is a 10 minute drive and Walmart is about a 20 minute drive.  I prefer Target but if I only need one thing I will just run there.

  • The two near me closed many years ago.  One is now Burlington Coat Factory (equally as gross and smelly) and the other is now a very nice Hy-Vee.
