Coats and car seats

I think this was brought up before, probably several times. But I'm asking again because my brief scanning of TB hasn't helped. Those of you that live in cold weather, how are you bundling yor LO up in the car seat? Do you take the coat on and off in the car? Why aren't winter coats okay? Is it Because it could cover her face so she can't breathe, or because it doesn't allow the straps to be firm enough to her body? Something else?

Re: Coats and car seats

  • They are not okay because the coat could compress in an accident, leaving the straps very loose. Anything thicker than a fleece is too thick. You want as little material between your child's body & the straps as possible.

I have seen people use car seat ponchos for their kids, basically a blanket with a hood in the middle for the head to go through.

I bundle DS in his fleece suit and then put a blanket over top. For DD, she wears a light fleece jacket and will usually have a blanket on her lap. We bring her winter coat along to wear if we need to walk into a store or something.

  • I put a light fleece jacket on her and warm up the car whenever possible. Like pp said, the straps could become too loose in an accident. I also think wearing a winter coat in a car seat would be terribly uncomfortable. Just put a blanket over her. The car seat gets really warm once the heat kicks in.

  • It's supposed to be really cold this week - lows in the single digits - so my plan is to start the car before I bring them out, put their usual fleece hooded jackets on them and attempt to get them to keep gloves on.  We also keep blankets in the car and on cold days I put a blanket over each of them.

Even with it being really cold I'm not too worried about them being out in the cold for the couple of minutes that it will take to get them from our condo to the car.  It's not like we'll be going for a walk or spending time outside.  If it's really windy and the wind is a concern then I'll just toss a blanket over them while we carry them to the car.

  • I just put a hat on Aria, wrap her in her blanket, and take her out to the car. I have remote start, so I always have the car warm and ready. (if I didn't have remote start, I'd run out and start it before I take her out. I usually run our bags/coats etc. out beforehand anyway, so this wouldn't be a big deal) I bring her coat along in case we're going to be outside for anything.

This morning, however, I have no idea what I was thinking. I went ahead and put Aria's puffy coat on her before we left. I even put her in the car seat with it on! (I never do this!) Halfway to my Mom's (so, 3 minutes down the road) I look in the rearview, and see Aria wriggling herself out of her coat, and consequently her car seat straps! I nearly had a heart attack! So, I pulled the car over as fast as I could, got out and took the coat off of her and strapped her back in. Seriously, I have no idea how I didn't think about her wearing that darn thing before I put her in the car. I guess it's because she wore her sweater jacket all weekend (it was like 50 degrees out all weekend, and the sweater jacket isn't thick), so I could put her in the seat with it on. Today, however it was a whopping 10 degrees when we left the house, so I grabbed the thicker jacket. Regardless, I feel like this is going to knock me out of the running for Mom of the Year. Gah!

I dropped Natalia on her head and she crawled off of our bed.  Olivia's hand got stuck on the vacuum and she has a nice scar from that.  She pulled the stocking holders on her head and has a bit of a dent in her forehead that's very visible when she scrunches up her face to cry.  At least you haven't maimed your kid Stick out tongue

Oh goodness! This made me giggle... does that make me a terrible friend?! Stick out tongue

Aria flopped off of her changing table on my watch a couple of weeks ago. She doesn't have any visible injuries, but she is really in to bunny hopping now... Tongue Tied We live and learn, I suppose!

  • We have this, but in brown.  It's thick enough that it keeps him warm, but thin enough that the straps are still tight.  Bonus - he looks completely ADORABLE in it!

  • We do as others have said and dress her in a fleece and hat, then lay a warm blanket over her. Granted it doesn't get nearly as cold here as it does elsewhere, but I don't think I'd do anything differently for the car if it was regularly freezing.

  • We use a fleece or windbreaker type jacket.  I wrap him in a blanket when going from car to wherever.  I also start the car in the mornings.

You all make me giggle though-- my car read -2 this morning and the wind chill is far less than that.   Temps in the single digits or teen would be nice.
