Weight loss?

OK so I was slightly overweight when I got pregnant so I could stand to lose a few pounds but I promised myself I wouldn't focus on that now and eat what I need to and let my body do its thing. Turns out in the last month I've dropped 5 lbs! I'm not sure if I need to be worried or not. I feel like the past two weeks I eat constantly, when I can, thanks nausea! But I'm still losing weight. I'm 12 weeks and 2 days and thought for sure by now I'd be putting weight on since the baby's growing. Fortunately I have an ultrasound scheduled for tomorrow so I'll know either way. Thoughts?

Re: Weight loss?

  • As long as you are eating nutritiously and taking a prenatal vitamin, I bet you are on the right track. Your doc will be able to help you. I did not get ms, so I have not lost weight but my good friend lost quite a bit of weight in the first tri due to nausea. Good luck tomorrow:)

  • I also was slightly overweight when I got pregnant and am down a few pounds. Are you eating different kinds of food? I'm eating more frequently but healthier which I think is the main reason I'm not really gaining weight. Everything I have read sounds like it is perfectly normal to get through the 1st trimester without gaining any weight or being down some. I'm glad you have a ultrasound tomorrow to give you reassurance that everything is alright!

  • No worries, I am almost 11 weeks and have lost 12 lbs. I think it's just from all my ms and food aversions. My doc said not to get used to it as I will start to pack on the lbs soon enough :
  • Nothing to worry about. I lost 11 lbs in first tri with DD, and have lost 3 so far in this pregnancy. According to my MW, you could never gain a pound and your baby will still be ok, they get all their nutrients before you get any, just be sure to take your prenantal.

ETA: Being overweight or not doesn't factor into this by the way. There might be concern if you were underweight, but I still doubt it would be much of a big deal.

  • DH had been frustrated because I lost a few pounds, so at my last appointment he asked the doctor about it. The doctor said that it is completely fine and that things should pick up in the next month or so. FWIW, I'm on the low side of the BMI and the doc still did not consider this a worry.

I'm rocking my baby and babies don't keep."
  • I have lost weight too. I have cut out soda, and eat smaller meals/snacks throughout the day. So I expected to lose at first.

  • I am overweight and have lost 8 lbs. and I didn't have any m/s.  I just wasn't hungry.  My baby is measuring a week bigger, so obviously my weight loss isn't effecting him.  My doctor isn't worried at all.  They say overweight women shouldn't gain as much weight anyway.  I have also heard of overweight women who have lost weight their whole pregnancy, not that we should be striving for diet time or anything.  As long as baby is growing you are fine.  Weight loss or gain, doesn't necessarily determine how baby is growing.  Good luck tomorrow.

  • I'm in the same boat as you (I'm overweight and have lost 14 pounds so far at 12 weeks). My husband is a internal medicine doctor and said it is okay to lose a little weight when in the first and some of the second trimester. He sad as long as you aren't cutting calories, but making healthier choices and lose weight as a result everything is good (that is what I have been doing). The end of the second trimester and the third trimester is when the weight gain should come. Good luck at your appointment tomorrow!

  • I wouldn't worry too much. If you started out a little overweight and are making healthier choices now AND dealing with some nausea it makes sense that you're losing weight. Your doctor might want to keep a closer eye on you and the baby especially if it continues but 5 pounds in a month really isn't that big of a deal and its very normal to lose weight in the first trimester.

Good luck at your ultrasound tomorrow!
