Waiting the 4 days....

So someone posted on the 6-9 month board about if you wait the 4 day rule and that got me thinking that we've been doing solids for 2 months now, started purees over a month ago and have gone through 5 fruits, 4 veggies and 2 grains with no problems.  We also don't have any allergies to foods in my family.

I've been a little more adventurous with letting him try some things here and there while we are out to eat - I let him lick a lemon for a second and have some rye toast...etc

Someone replied that with some foods they wait the 4 days and other foods they don't, so I started to wonder which ones most people would wait it out for....

Apricots, Mangos, Nectarines, Peaches, Plums, Pumpkin..... White Potatoes, Green Beans....etc.  I still have quite a few to go through to finish stage ones and then it's on to stage two which I am equally confused about... Strawberries, blueberries...etc.

Any insight would be helpful!  Sorry if I just ranted on and on, I'm not really sure how to word what I'm thinking!

Re: Waiting the 4 days....

  • My doctor said if there is no history of food allergies in the family, there's no reason to wait. The new recommendations are also that the introduction of common allergy foods should be begin right away instead of delaying.

We're also doing BLW so that's in line with that practice. We started combination meals right away. I've never given DS just one thing to eat.

  • I once did the math on the number of common foods and spices.  If you leave a 4 day window in between, it was going to take me 1.5 years to introduce LO to all of them.  That seemed silly to me, since my plan was to feed her mostly from the table with us.

With DD#1, once we got through 10-15 foods and a few spices, I would introduce something every 2 days.  That seemed like enough time to see a reaction, if there was one.  With DD#2, I'm even less concerned.

But, in the end, it's up to you and what you feel comfortable with.  My family has no food allergies, so I am not too concerned about food.  HOWEVER, I have a lot of skin allergies - so I am hypervigilant about what I put on their skin.

  • Here is a link to an article about allergies that I found helpful.  At the end there is a chart showing which foods are more likely to cause a reaction than others.

We're pretty adventurous with her food (and do not wait the 4 days but try to only give her 1 unique thing at a time) but tend to be cautious about high allergen things like strawberries, nuts & peanut butter, shellfish, and spices like cinnamon.

  • Thanks so much!  I'm going to switch to the 2 day thing....like you said it would take FOREVER to introduce all foods to them :)

  • I am waiting 2 days, now we started more combination stuff. I am waiting on citrus and berries because I have allergies.

Ditto this. When she first started solids at 6 months, I waited a few days before each new food. Now we introduce new foods without waiting so long in between. I do want to wait on shellfish though. DH has a shellfish allergy, so I'd like to wait until she is talking before introducing any shellfish so she can tell me if her throat is itchy.

  • We dont really wait anymore either. If its something new she gets it in the morning just in case she were to have a reaction. We don't have any food allergies in our family so Im not overly worried.
