Hey there! I have posted once here before. My husband and I are thinking about ttc LO2 fairly soon, but I'm not sure what we will actually need for a second baby. I get the second car seat, and crib, but what are some sort of not obvious things you needed?
I am a SAHM (so no DC costs thank goodness), and my first LO is a boy.
Re: What do you actually need to buy?
All we got was a new monitor as DD still uses hers and I think that's it. When the LO grows out of the infant seat we'll get a new car seat for them. We switched dd to a floor bed so her bed is going to the baby and when baby needs out of the crib we'll put baby on the floor bed and put DD into the double that's in her room already.
Bare in mind though that we EBF and baby wear so we don't need a double stroller (we have a stroller which DD will go in if needed).
You may need new clothes based on sex and season but we were team green so that wasn't an issue for us and the new baby is going to live in PJs as dressing DD is a PITA already.
We got DD1 a new car seat, but she needed that regardless of whether we had 2u2 or not. A double stroller, which isn't a necessity to some but is for us. A second monitor, new nipples for the bottles, new pacifiers. Really, I think that was it besides the obvious diapers/formula if needed. Not including the new car seat, I bet we spent less than $200 getting ready for #2. My girls were born opposite seasons but that hasn't been an issue for us as DD2 has been smaller than her sister from the start, so still able to use all the same clothes.
We did not get a second crib, we kept DD2 in our room in a RNP until we were ready to move DD1 to a toddler bed, then used the same crib for DD2.
DD1 Feb 2010
DD2 Sept 2011
We had:
2 cribs,
2 monitors,
kept the high chair and also got one that clipped onto the dining room chair (converted to booster so DS was in a high chair and DD was at the table.)
2 car seats, (used her infant seat and then moved to a convertible)
I used my double stroller every single day,
diaper stations on each floor with extra clothing for each kid,
2 humidifiers (because they always get sick at the same time)
i had a bath seat from0-6 months in the tub with DD (https://www.amazon.com/PRI-Infant-Bath-Seat-White/dp/B000BXJZDY/ref=sr_1_6?s=baby-products&ie=UTF8&qid=1357944728&sr=1-6&keywords=bath+seat)
I'm planning on getting little things like more towels, more washcloths, more burp cloths, sheets, pacifiers... all those basics. I'm also getting things that DD may not be ready to part with yet like her Cloud B giraffe (we'll be getting the sheep for LO#2, to avoid issues) and a glow sea horse and things like blankets, etc.
We're also doing a new PnP, mainly because ours is not gender neutral and DD won't sleep in it anyway because the mattress is terribly hard (it was a cheaper one). Infant seat, stroller, we'll be getting a hand-me-down toddler bed for DD (otherwise we'd be buying one) but we'll need to get another crib mattress. We won't need another monitor because LO will be in our room and then share with DD, but if that won't be the situation with you then you may want a second one.
Our second isn't here yet but I haven't bought anything, they will be about 21 months apart. We are buying:
A dresser for the new nursery
Changing pad for the top of the dresser in new nursery
Exchanging our video monitor for a double video monitor (at BRU trade-in event going on now)
Either a twin bed for DD, or a second crib & mattress. Will have to see in a couple months if DD is ready to transition or not. In the meantime, LO2 will sleep in our existing PnP in our room at first anyway.
Maybe a second rocking chair for the new nursery. We still use DD's chair for story time at night.
The Diaper genie I am moving to their shared bathroom. I work FT, so not planning on buying a double stroller, I don't think we need it.
