Babies: 6 - 9 Months

Out of Flu vaccines - WWYD

DD got her first flu vaccine when she turned 6 months.  She was supposed to get her second dose today, but they are out.  As I understand it, many doctors are out and the pharmacies won't give them to infants.

I spoke with the rude office girl at our ped and she was so non-chalant about it.  She's like "we've had them since august (as if I delayed getting her shot) and now we're out."  I asked if there were other doctors in the area who still had them, she goes "How would I know.  You could call around, but other people are calling here, so I guess not."  Then I asked if she would be protected from just one shot and she goes, "she'll have some protection."  She said this all with the attitude as if I'm the one who dropped the ball here.

So, this is a two part WWYD....

1.  Should I be freaked out?  Would you call around to every doctor in the area and see if someone would give her a 2nd vaccine?

2.  Would you call the doctor and give her a piece of your mind?  If I was the doctor's office, I would be apologizing for the situation.  Even if the supplier is out and it's not really your fault, you could give parents a little sympathy.

  • I'd contact your ped directly.  I know it's not the office's fault, but the assistant's attitude is unacceptable IMHO.

  • Personally, I would call around to look for the second dose of the vaccine. This is because it's just been going around like crazy and I'm a strong supporter for vaccines.

Also, agreed with PP. There's no need for her to be so rude to you when you're being a concerned mother! And I agree with you that the office should apologize because that's just common courtesy!

All this being said, did you get the vaccine yourself? The antibodies are passed along through the breast milk and if your LO is still getting BM this will definitely help protect her as well as her first dose. So take comfort in that at least...

    good luck!

    This.

It is not your fault. We ran into the same thing with DD2 (minus the rude receptionist). Since we had to wait until her 6 month appt. (since they don't do them to children any younger than 6 months) and they said that while they had the initial vaccine, that by the time she needs her booster they might be out. My pedi said it isn't that big of a deal if she doesn't get the booster.

  • My lo got her 1st dose last week and the pedi told me that at this time they have plenty of vaccine but if they were to run out he would just be sure to give her two doses next year and that it isn't that big of a deal!

  • 1.  I would fight a fair amount to try to find the second dose.

    2.  I would ABSOLUTELY file a complaint with their version of Patient Relations.

  • I'd probably wait and mention it to the dr at the 9m appt.  In the meantime maybe try your county or state health department - they may be able to direct you to a clinic that has infant shots still.

When we got K's booster a few weeks ago the nurse made a comment about "not too many left"

  • 1. This happened to us too. We were told to go to the county health department for it. I'm not sure where you live, but you could start there instead of making multiple calls. Hopefully they have a good supply.

We are going to try and take DS on Wed for his second does.

     2. I am totally that woman that would give the doctor notice of how the staff treated you...a lot of times the office staff and not the doctor is the reason someone will switch doctors. Plus I am a huge *** when someone rubs me the wrong way (especially when they are supposed to be there to help me...I am really hard on customer service people since most of them don't live up to the title).

  • To make you feel better...my daughter was in the same age boat, she had "just" gotten her second dose when we came down with influenza A. So far, 10 days in, she just has the sniffles...so I think even one dose provides pretty good protection (since her second won't be fully effective until 5 days from now).
