At my 37 week check this past Wednesday I was at 4cm. My doc was concerned due to how quickly my last two labors happened (2 hours start to finish...constant worry about if I will make it to the hospital in time). With my son I went into labor the morning after a 4cm check. Anyway, he put me on a monitor just to make sure there weren't any contractions happening that I just didn't realize (with my previous two pregnancies I never had contractions prior to being in labor) and there was not. We decided that I would schedule my 38 week check on Monday (rather than my normal Wed appt) and he mentioned the possibility of stripping my membranes if I have progressed but not started labor yet at that time. I didn't think anything of it at the time but now I'm wondering why he would need to do anything to get things moving rather just waiting for it to happen on it's own. Is there some concern about being 4+ cm and not in labor yet? Anyone else have any experience being this dilated for several days?
Re: Pros and cons please
I would decline to have membranes stripped. That should be reserved for long labors that are not progressing, for example both my girls were born 40 weeks 4 days, and after 8 days of laten labor where I was getting VERY little sleep due to consistent contractions that simply wouldn't click into labor, they stripped my membranes. You're probably not at much risk for a c-section if he does strip them, probably just go into labor and have your baby quickly, but I always side with no intervention when unnecessary. Should this labor be different from your previous labors the stripping would then automatically put you on a time table of how OB wants your labor to progress (depending on the hospital policies of course, some are better than others), where if you don't go into active labor after a set number of hours they break your water, add pitocin, possible c-section. If baby is content to stay in there longer than let him/her. The only up side I can see to his doing this is taking away the element of surprise when you go into labor, making this a more controlled situation where you can have time to arrange for your older children to be taken care of while you have the baby, kind of like a scheduled c-section. I'd ask him why he wants to do that, and what steps would be taken if that doesn't send you into active labor, weighing the risks and rewards of your options. Best of luck! I'll say a little prayer for you tonight!
I'm leaning this way too now that I have had time to think about it. I will be able to ask more questions if the doc tomorrow about his reasons.
I would agree to membranes stripped at 39 weeks, not 38. 39 weeks is a lot safer than 38.
