Alernative to morphine pump after c-section

Was anyone offered an alternative pain management solution?  I had the morphine pump after my 1st CS and am anticipating having a RCS this time, but the morphine didn't touch my pain.  I was hitting that pump every few minutes for relief, and I am not one to use much pain medication (rarely used as much as half my oral pain meds after each of my 4 knee surgeries).

I believe I was okay by the second day, but that first night was just brutal.  Just curious if anyone has any suggestions I can bring to my OB this time, or should I just ask him what he recommends?

Re: Alernative to morphine pump after c-section

  • My RCS recovery was so much less painful than my first c-section and I only needed ibuprofen the second time around.  Definitely talk to you doctor because I'm sure there are a lot of pain options -- I was just lucky and didn't need any.

  • I had demerol in my pain pump. They actually asked me what I wanted. But I had been a frequent patient there for kidney issues and was in a pain patch from 17 weeks on....

  • I am alergic to Morphine so I have had toradol for a few and dilaudid (sp) for another few.  ( I have had 5 C-sections total) .  Good luck and God Bless!

  • I declined pain meds post op, but the nurses came in to offer Vicodin or Tylenol every few hours.  I would discuss with your doctor now and bring it up during admissions.  Most nurses take pain management very seriously and will work with you and your doctors to get it under control.

  • I was on roxicet (generic percocet, I believe) for about a day before I stopped taking it because it gave me horrible dreams. (Narcotic meds do that to me.)

I switched to ibuprofen (the huge pills) and was fine.

  • Didn't have a pain pump either.  I know I alternated between 2 drugs, but I'm not positive what they were anymore (wanna say Vicodin and ibuprofen).  I'm assuming that's what they'll do this time as well (RCS is Monday).
  • Thanks for the responses.  I have my first OB appt. next week (was seeing my RE until last week) and I think I'll bring it up then, just to get the conversation started.

  • Good luck! I just took Percocet and Ibuprofen. It really wasn't nearly as bad as I thought it would be.

I didn't have a morphine pump with my c-section. The anesthesiologist gave me something in my spinal to help with pain for the first 18 hours, and then after that it was percoet and ibuprofen as i asked for it.

This was me exactly.  I did get sick after surgery when they brought me to my room.

  • They gave me Duramorph in my epi during my section and I didn't need any pain meds after, I started taking Motrin once I got home but that was all I ever needed.
