4oz BM in bottle ?

LO has always been good taking a bottle of pumped BM. I've always made 4oz bottles for either my mom or DH to give her. When she nurses obviously she gets enough because she has control over it. Should I increase the amount of BM given in the bottle? When she was 2 months DH gave her a 5oz bottle and she pretty much spit up what appeared to be the extra ounce. I guess I could try it and see what happens. She doesn't seem upset after she eats (like she's not getting enough). Maybe I should just wait for that to happen? Just curious how much BM other moms are giving in the bottle. TIA.

Re: 4oz BM in bottle ?

  • My LO has 5 oz of BM in a bottle. Sometimes he doesn't finish it, sometimes he wants another half oz. But usually its 5oz every 34 hours. How often is ur LO eating?

  • Kellymom has a milk calculator. Maybe that will help.

  • When she's getting a bottle all day (while I'm at work) she eats every 2-3 hours. When I'm home with her and she nurses it's closer to every 2 hours.

  • How often is she eating during the day?  My LO eats only 3-4 times total during the day now (EBF), so I offer a 6 oz bottle before bedtime and he has no problem drinking the entire thing.  Definitely check out the calculator on kellymom.

  • It's weird. He eats 4 to 5 oz which is what I pump from both sides but when he nurses he only takes one side.

This is the exact same for me too!

  • I am glad you posted this. I never thought to look at Kellymom for the calculator. DD is about to start daycare and bottles during the day every day and I am not sure how much to send. Now I at least have a good starting point.

  • We've always done 4 oz, 1 bottle a day. I've been back at work for 2 weeks and sent 4 oz bottles every 3 hrs. He has always been happy with 4 oz but DH has just started giving him 5oz when he feeds him in the morning because he sleeps 10 to 12 hrs at night and wanted more.

I also read that the composition of the milk changes. I send frozen milk to DCP and am sending the oldest milk in my stash from November. I wondered if that would matter and eventually he would want more during the day because it wasn't the right milk for him at that time.

  • My dd never took more than 4 oz in a bottle the entire time she took bottles. I hope this guy is the same, since I doubt I'll be able to pump enough otherwise!

  • DS took 4 oz until about 9 months old and then he started taking 5 oz until he turned 1 and was weaned. If we gave him any more than that he spit it up. Dd is taking 4 oz and seems content.

  • DD only gets a bottle a few times a week. She was taking 4oz until she was 3mo and then she went up to 5oz.

Ds takes 4oz bottles. From what I've read, breastfed babies typically don't need to increase the amount like ff babies because the content of breastmilk changes as they get older to meet their needs. I can't remember where I read this, possibly kellymom?

Ditto. I remember reading this when bfing ds1. He never took more than 4 oz until he was around 9 or 10 months and my supply started dipping due to AF. Ds2 only takes 3 oz every 3 hours right now, he's content after feeding and spits up more if we add more. When we are together he nurses more frequently but I think he does because he is more snacky and wants the bonding.

I think that's pretty common. Pumps just aren't as efficient as a baby (unless the baby has latch/milk removal issues, obviously) so they'll be able to get more milk. When nursing, there's a whole hormonal component to letdown and supply which stimulates more milk. When pumping, it's pure physical stimulation that gets the letdown so it's generally weaker... if that makes sense.
