crocheting a baby hat?

Just spent 2 hours watching you tube videos on how to crochet a baby beanie and finally I'm giving up.  I don't know how to read crochet patterns and I learn better by watching so I thought - how hard can this be?  I'm a crafty person, and love to sew.  Yikes - more difficult than I thought!  Many of the videos go too fast or they just assume you know what to do and don't slow their actions down.  Anyone have any advice on what video to watch?  I just want to make a simple baby beanie with 1 color.  No facy flowers or turning the hat into an ice cream sundae(although they are very cute I think I need to start simple :)  I foudn a great video but then it was for an adult hat so I'm not sure how to convert the directions into a smaller baby hat.

I will also post of the crafty board, but I need all the help I can get.

Re: crocheting a baby hat?

  • Try looking at Ravelry.com there might be videos or links to image by image directions. It took my many tries to learn to crochet, and I don't crochet "right" I hold the hook the way my grama did, differently than most, so I'd be a horrible teacher. But I spend alot of time on Pinterest and Ravelry for patterns.

The main difference between an adult size and a child or baby size is how long you spend "increasing". when you are adding multiple stitches into one chain space or sc (single chain) space you are increasing. I've found adding or subtracting a few rows of increases can really change the size of a hat easily.

    Good Luck!

  • I had to learn by having a friend teach me. Check with your local Michaels or other craft store. A lot of times they will have a begginning to crochet class for like $10 and it'll be an hour or two on a saturday. They'll teach you the basic stitches and you should be good to go.

  • Instead of watching a video on how to make an entire hat, try to just learn a few stitches from a video and practice that then watch another video on how to start a hat (magic ring).  That's how I learned last year and with some practice I got pretty good.  There was one stitch that was too hard to figure out on a video and I had to find someone to teach me.
  • I just joined Ravelry yesterday - there is so much information for knitting and crocheting projects. It's like a fiber artist's porn! If you decide to make an account (which is free), we should be friends. I'm on there with the same name I have here.

  • I plan to learn to crochet but I misplaced my hook lol but I taught myself to knit mostly cause I'm left handed and I second what others have said learn the basic stitches first and practice then try a hat and there are thousands of free patterns online especially baby ones! Good luck...pip when/if you finish one!

  • I did not think I was going to be able to crochet, it seemed too hard. A friend I work with kind of taught me, but she does it backwards. She told me to practice the stitches first. Even if it is an 8x8 square of each stitch. Then try either a youtube video or a pattern again. Good luck!
