Adoption

Financial question

Just popping over to ask a few random financial questions.

Is a credit check part of the background check? Or do you have to have good credit to adopt?

if someone filed bankruptcy, would they be able to adopt? Assuming, they currently had the means to do so?

Thanks, just a few thoughts I was curious about.

Re: Financial question

  • From what I understand (and please someone correct me if I'm wrong!) a credit check is not part of the adoption process, at least as far as international adoption goes. We both are in the process of rebuilding our credit due to a recent foreclosure so this was definitely an issue important to us. From what I understand it will not hurt us in the adoption process. They do, however, want to see financial earnings, etc. to make sure you do have the means to adopt.

  • We were asked to fill out a page with earnings and expenses, and assets/liabilities. They didn't ask us for any proof and they didn't check our credit, though I imagine that part is different by agency. This was for a domestic agency adoption.

  • What Fredalina said.  We were also foster to adopt. We did not require a credit check, but have to show recent pay stubs and last year's tax return.

I have heard that some private agencies or international adoption agencies due credit checks, but others may be able to elaborate on that.

It was basically the same for us. The only documentation we had to show was the first two pages of our tax return from the previous year.
