I Didn't Know I was Pregnant?

So I will admit I have watched the show before I got pregnant. I havent seen it on tv lately and I always wondered about the idea of not knowing you are pregnant until labor. Now that I am pregnant, I know I would never fall into that category. If the lack of period and baby bump weren't an indication, then the ms, heartburn and tiredness would be dead give aways. However, I know pregnancy differs from person to person, so everyone has a different experience. I was thinking about it and now I am curious, any ladies out there who obviously know you are pregnant but if you were not expecting it, you could have potentially not known until labor? If that makes any sense, lol

ETA: bumping on the mobile...sorry for any errors!

  • I'm clueless as well. You'd think a woman would notice when her bump started growing...

  • The whole baby moving is a bit of a tip off (as if the lack of period, tiredness, breast/belly growth wasn't enough).  I honestly don't know how anyone could not know.  Or have sex and then no period and not take a test.

  • Other than the weight gain and missed period I haven't had a lot of symptoms. Sometimes when baby moves it feels like bowel noises or constipations side effects. I never had morning sickness  and I don't feel overly tired. So I guess I could see how someone could not know if they never got the bump and they didn't have a regular period. But baby would also not have to be active because there are times where it just feels like kicks.

  • I can't imagine not knowing. I was insanely sick for the first 18 weeks and not to mention extremely exhausted and constipated. Then came heart burn and acid reflux. I didn't get a bump until 22 weeks or so but still there was enough stuff going on that it is totally mind boggling to me that people don't know they are pregnant.

  • Having bled on and off for the first 17 weeks, and as a person who bloats easily normally, being still on the losing side of weight gain, and with an anterior placenta that really seems to muffle movement, and never having had MS, yup, I could see not knowing. Lol.

Add in a previous diagnosis of infertility, and I could definitely have stayed in denial for a long time.

But, since I wanted it so bad, I think I always looked for reasons to think I was, and this helped me to know early on.
  • Personally, I have had tons of very obvious indications I am pregnant. But I used to watch the show, and one of the women was in her 40s and had her tubes tied, so even with vague things like tiredness and backache I can see her not considering she could be pregnant. Another one was a woman who must have gotten pregnant shortly after having her first baby, and so she though her periods just hasn't come back yet and that she was having a hard time with losing baby weight. So I think it really is plausible in some extreme cases.
  • There was a girl I went to high school with that didn't know she was pregnant till she went into labor. She was a very petite girl. She never got a bump, her chest didn't grow noticeably, she never had ms and she had her periods every month. During one of her periods she started having severe cramping that lasted quite a few hours(labor). She alerted her mother who took her to the ER who told her she was in labor. I believe she had an anterior placenta but since she was in labor when they discovered the pregnancy not sure. This young girl was only 17 so definitely did not know what to expect when you're pregnant. The baby if I remember right was almost 6lbs so not a small baby either.

Now if you don't think that is possible how about getting pregnant while already pregnant? I know a woman who got pregnant when she was around 12 weeks pregnant already. I don't remember exactly how they were able to deliver the second one because having 2 c-sections that close would not have been an option. I will have to get ahold of her sister(who I am good friends with) to find out.

  • yea...she had a dating ultrasound and only 1 baby(was around 8-9 weeks). Went back in for her a/s at around 18-20 weeks and saw 1st baby but also another fetus measuring at about 6-8 weeks. This woman was still getting her period at the beginning of her pregnancy which meant she was still producing eggs. They had sex during this time and wound up pregnant again when the 1st was about 12 weeks along.

I know alot of people with weird medical anomalies. I also have a friend who has 2 uteruses.

    Wait, what?!?

Sounds crazy but I know someone who has 2 uterus(es?) and she is pregnant in one of them but the other thinks it's pregnant too so it's also getting bigger.  I'd imagine if you had two uteruses that you might be able to get pregnant in both at different times similtaneously.

I also have a friend who didn't know she was pregnant until 22 weeks because she had been on the depo shot and never gotten a period so she wasn't suspicous when she was first pregnant, no ms, no noticible fatigue.  She really got huge and swollen at the end of the pregnancy though so there would have been no denying it at that point.

  • No way! Going months without a period wouldn't tip me off because of how messed up my cycle has always been but between the giant beachball under my shirt and feeling kicks and jabs coming from inside it would be impossible.

  • This happened to my best friend's sister and I am still very skeptical that she didn't know. I think it was just a deep sense of denial. She credited her weight gain to being depressed over her breakup and supposedly her belly didn't look like a pregnant belly (I lived in a different state at the time and never saw her). She claims she did feel kicks but always thought they were gas. When she went into labor, they thought it was just really bad stomach pains. An ultrasound at the hospital revealed she was 37 wks. Lucky for her she ended up with a healthy 7 lb baby boy. Everyone was really worried because she was quite the partier. After he was born, she says that she did have a heightened sense of smell and certain foods turned her off but she didn't even think that she could be pregnant because her cycles have always been way off. It was so crazy.

  • Lets say I didn't get periods or I was close enough in age to be pre-menopausal (though some of those girls on the show will get periods but they will be light periods).... I might have missed it for a few months, but the obvious bump in my mid-section is pretty unmistakable right now. Plus the heartburn I'm experiencing, is something I only get with I'm pregnant. Unless I was having this baby at 23 weeks (which is when I started feeling my daughter with an anterior placenta) there is no way I could mistake those jabs and kicks for anything other than a baby!
    image
  • FYI, it can happen. I have a friend who adopted a little girl from a couple who thought they were done. Birth mom thought she was going through early menopause and didn't realize she was pregnant until about 7 months in when she started feeling the baby kick... They had a 17 year old and decided they didn't want to start all over so they found my friend and her husband (my friend lost her cervix to cancer so it is difficult for her to conceive much less carry) and the rest is history!
    image
  • Entirely possible, my godmother didn't know she was pregnant until the 8th month of pregnancy she was overweight and didn't feel the baby move at all, she also had no symptoms.

  • The only clue I would have is the missing period.  I am overweight and don't have the lovely round bump.  I never threw up, very rarely had nausea, and was tired even before I got pregnant (thanks anemia).

  • This anterior placenta is making it really hard to distinguish kicks and jabs versus gas. Since I know I am pregnant I am more intune to differentiating, but could see how you can make it over halfway without knowing if missing periods was normal for you.

    This is insane!
  • I've never seen the show and this is my first pregnancy, and I always thought it was crazy, but honestly, if I wasn't so in tune with my body and tracking everything (including my periods, my weight, the food I eat), I can kind of see how I might not have known. I used to have messed up periods and might not have questioned why I didn't have one or even realized (I have PCOS, and going months without a period is a typical symptom), and I've had no real other symptoms either. My energy has been the same and I haven't had any sickness symptoms that I would have attributed to anything but a random bout of nausea or random heartburn. I definitely have a bump now, but I am overweight and sometimes I still feel like I just look more chunky, like I've gained weight back, not necessarily pregnant. At this point I'm feeling the baby move a lot, though I just started realizing it a few weeks ago, and I'm not sure what I would have thought it was, but I can imagine that if I hadn't realized I was pregnant, I don't think "oh it must be a baby" would be the first thought I had by way of an explanation, you know? Having never felt that before and not being prepared for it... I'm not sure. Obviously my opinion may change as this pregnancy progresses but I think I can safely say that I could very easily have no idea at this point (25 weeks).

  • Funnily enough I haven't really had any of the classic symptoms of pregnancy apart from frequent peeing and tiredness. For example, I've had no morning sickness at all (although I have felt a little queasy at times).  This was not a blessing because when you don't have the classic symptoms you worry that things aren't going as they should be.

I suppose the frequent toilet visits and the tiredness could be put down to other things.  The only dead give away for me would be the lack of my monthly cycle, oh and my expanding tummy!!

  • We weren't trying to get pregnant, and at 42 I didn't think it was a possibility really anymore.  When AF was late, I thought maybe the beginnings of menopause?  However, after 2 weeks of aching boobs, I was pretty confident something was up and did a test.  If you've had a child before, even if you weren't trying, I think you'd be more in tune with your body and know pretty much from the start.

I could maybe see women who never had a baby before going to 20-25 weeks, but how would you possibly miss all this movement?!?!?  Gas does not feel like this!

  • There's a mom in my area who is part of a facebook group that I am involved in. She delievered a baby at 27 weeks. She didn't know she was pregnant at all. Because she did not get period her whole life because of hormones things she had to take. The only reason she had her baby at 27 weeks because she was in a massive car accident. She was not showing and she said all the movement she thought was gas. Also she went to a doctor when she was 20 weeks because of the weird feeling (movement) she was feeling. They tested her for pregnancy and she was negitive even at 20 weeks.

She has a healthy 2 year old girl now.

  • Dropping in from lurking to post.. I'm not sure if it's possible to go until delivery without knowing, but I'm nobody to judge, I do know that it's possible to get to 24 weeks and not know. As unbelievable as it may sound, I just found out that I'm pregnant and already 24 weeks. I honestly had no symptoms other than some slight nausea, which I kept thinking was due to the stomach virus my kids had. I'm BFing my 7 month old and haven't had a regular period, and absolutely no movement yet. I've been continuosly spotting through the entire time AND have taken a test at least once a month. Nothing, they kept showing up negative. I went in to the doctor the other day to have a blood test done and found out I'm already 24 weeks.

It was a big surprise but a wonderful one. So I can definitely say it's possible to make it to 24 weeks without knowing!

  • A coworker of mine didn't know until she had the baby.  I worked with her the ENTIRE time of her pregnancy and none of us had a clue, and she weighed maybe 120 lbs at most, not overweight in the slightest.  She and her husband were actually were starting to think she might have some kind of tumor (a few months before she gave birth) because her stomach had gotten a little bit bigger, and she went to get an Xray and nothing showed up!  She had been with her husband for nearly 12 years, never used protection and they hadn't gotten pregnant so she just assumed that she couldn't have one with him (she had already grown children).

I came into work one day and someone told me she wasn't going to be able to come in because she'd had a baby, and my jaw nearly hit the floor.  Granted, she did wear scrubs and it might have covered up her weight gain a little bit, but she never got a pregnant bump for sure.  When we told everyone at work that she'd had a baby, everyone thought it was a practical joke until she brought Jonah in about two weeks later.  Insane.

Welcome! Granted I've known since about 3 weeks but we are similar in that we both have 7 month olds and are now more than half way through another pregnancy. I'm sure it was a complete shock to you since you are so far along. I have had some time to get used to the news and not as shocked anymore. Feel free to come over to the 2U2 board. The ladies there have been great in giving advice to us moms who are pregnant with our 2nd baby so close to the first.

  • It was a shock in deed but a very wonderful one! I've had a miscarriage before so I'm very cautious/nervous to the very end but it has definitely made me more grateful to have the opportunity to be pregnant. I'll definitely drop in on the 2u2 board, even though this will be my second time with 2u2 I know first hand you can never have too much good advice.
