Babies: 6 - 9 Months

BLW questions

I'm sure it has been asked before but my LO just turned 6 months. What age did other Mommas start BLW? Why did you choose that over purees? I noticed that my daughter doesn't know what to do with pieces of food when I put it up to her mouth but she gobbles down all purees. Her pediatrician said that I can give her table food...

TIA for any comments. By the way my daughter is extremely small 12 lbs at 6 months so any suggestions for high calorie foods are also welcome!!

Re: BLW questions

  • Don't put food up to her mouth.  With BLW the BABY is leading the eating.  By baby feeding herself, it decreases the risk of choking.  It's one of the principles of that way of feeding.  I just lay the food on her highchair tray and she picks up what she wants/can eat.  I have never put any food in my daughter's mouth for her.

I started at roughly 6 months.

DD is small too.  We give her lots of avocado, high fat yogurt, some cheese (watch salt content).

i could have written the above! My dd loves avocado and yoghurt which is great and has meant that she is now chunking up nicely! I have also made hummus and I give that to her on breadsticks which she shoves into her mouth very quickly. I also mix cheese into scrambles eggs and give that to her on a loaded spoon.

BLW is so fun, I can't believe I was nervous about it before I started, it's great to see your child enjoying food for themselves without eing spoon fed. Also makes life much easier when you are out as they can eat the same as you, helps you make much healthier choices too which isn't a bad side effect! Good luck with it all!
