Just a Note

Is it just me or does it feel like if you start LO on solids before 6 months, you are suddenly a terrible parent. I have read every reason from an unready digestive tract to causing obesity. What happened to listening to your baby and maternal instinct?Thankfully my pediatrician is very supportive and understanding so I don't hear this from her.

  • Yes! Some babies are ready before others! I never heard of ths obesity one. Mt daughter started at 4 months and is under weight. Some folks are just unnecessary.

    WIC was one of them,

As to the Obesity thing, it primarily refers to formula-fed infants.

  • Wic is going to give you trouble just for not BFing because they want to push breast is best. Tell them to give you your checks and Stfu.

Agreed. I have an appointment at WIC next month and I know that they're going to give me trouble because my baby gave up on breast feeding and I haven't lost any more weight. I said it once and I'll say it again: not all babies are the same. When you introduce solids is up to you and your baby, no one else.

We started formula right before Christmas, and the Pedi okayed solids last week. I'm sure I'll get an ear full next month when I go.

  • A friend of mine wanted to work for WIC as a nutritionist but changed her mind when she learned they didn't individualize for each baby or mother.

DD started solids because she's underweight. I looked at her paperwork again and she's in the 10 to 25th percentile... Not the 25th. Her pedi doesn't like to start before 6mo but said sometimes solid foods jump start babies' appetites when you see a decrease. DD had dropped to eating 19 to 22oz of formula a day. Since starting solids on Friday, she's taking in 30 to 32oz of formula a day!

Go with your gut... Not WIC's.

  • Most people around here look at you crazy if you wait until 6 months lol

I like the motto, "watch the baby, not the calendar." And I really don't care what you do with your child, as long as you aren't putting them in danger.

Our plan was initially 6 months, but I think we may start in the next week or so. Our pedi likes to recommend solids at 5 months for formula fed babies and 6 months for BF babies. BF adapts for the baby, whereas formula does not. He would rather see a baby eat solids than eating large bottles of formula to get the calories they need.

Yeah, I'm not getting crap for it quite yet, but more like raised eyebrows. I think in a month I'll get the verbal questioning. I just want to wait until 8 months or so, maybe 9. My milk supply is pretty... fragile. And since milk or formula is what their main nutrition needs to come from for now, I don't want to risk my milk production just to play with solids. But that's just me, if I had a great supply I might lean more toward solids sooner.

But I don't see what's wrong with feeding whatever you want with the pedi's go ahead. Good lord. I haven't signed up for wic in Ohio yet because I'm not sure if I will need it, and I know I won't need it for LO because we don't really want to use jarred stuff. But in Illinois, the caseworker I usually talked to was very friendly and pro BF... while the nutritionist wanted to "make sure" I didn't just want formula [she also said my 3 week old shouldn't be crying, she should be either "eating or sleeping."]

I think wic will be hit or miss. All you need to do, if they give you crap for it, is tell them that you talked to the pediatrician and you're following his instructions.

  • I was told by our dr to wait until 6 months for solids because their tummies aren't ready, but I've done research and aside from doubling her birthweight J is showing many signs that she is ready, so we started with one meal if rice cereal a day for now and we will go from there, so far he loves it.
