Weight watchers - yay or nay?

Since I can't seem to find the time or energy to hit up the gym...it's nearly impossible with our schedules :( i'm looking for other ways to cut back on my baby weight (after the baby's born, unless they can work with pregnant people but i'm not sure how i'll do while pregnant!).

Have any of you used weight watchers?  Tell me your thoughts.  Is it worth it?  If so, is online better than the actual meetings/check ins?  My health insurance should cover the first few months so that's nice but i could also use that money towards C's gymnastics or swim lessons.  Just thinking a head! :)

Re: Weight watchers - yay or nay?

  • While you can't do WW while pregnant, I think its a great way to get back in shape after having a baby. I lost 25lbs in grad school with it and then the 30lbs I gained with Charlie. I plan on enrolling after Ginny is born as well.

To be honest, the online tools are a fabulous support for when you're out and about (especially now with all of their smart phone apps), but the meetings really do keep you in line from week to week. I forget what the stat is, but people lose something like 30% more weight when they go to meetings than just using e-tools alone.

I used to work for them, so if you have any specific questions I'll see if I can help! :)

  • I love WW. I went on it the Feb after DS was born and lost 60lbs. I plan on going back on it after DS2 is born.

Have any of you used weight watchers?  Yes! I lost 40 lbs on WW in 2008. I love it. Tell me your thoughts.  Is it worth it?  Definitely worth it if you take it seriously. It's expensive ($40 a month) and I hate wasting money so I really gave it my all. I went to meetings once a week which I though helped keep me accountable. If so, is online better than the actual meetings/check ins?  So no, I don't think online is better - I think check in is better. My health insurance should cover the first few months so that's nice but i could also use that money towards C's gymnastics or swim lessons.  Just thinking a head! :)

  • Well, I've never actually done WW, but that doesn't stop me from having an opinion about it :P

I think it's great for people who struggle with accountability and would benefit from the weekly check ins. I don't think the online version would be worth paying for. There are so many free online support groups you could join that it's not necessary. I also think that it's better just to count calories than to use the WW point system just because calories are universal and there are lots of websites and applications that you can use to track your calories.

Personally, I would try doing it on your own. Download an application and join a good (free) online fitness community and start counting calories. If you can make time to track your calories and you are consistent with how many you intake, you will be successful. If you find that you need the motivation of "live" people to keep you accountable, then you can always try WW later.

  • I did weight watchers successfully before I found out I was pregnant with DD. At that time I went to weekly meetings and wrote out my points etc.

I have since tried online, and while it's nice and easy to use, I find myself having trouble sticking to it.

  • I just signed up for WW today. My work offers a wellness repayment up to 150 a year, so it will help. My first weigh in is tomorrow morning.
I did WW in 2007 and lost close to 60 lbs. It works. I went to the meetings then and will do the same this time. You get ideas from others in the meetings and it keeps me accountible.
We can do ww check ins here if you want.

  • I have done WW 3 times. Once after gaining weight while quitting smoking, again to help lose the baby weight and am back on it now to lose the remaining pudge that I can't quite shake.

It is a good program. The points system is easy to follow, the meetings are great and I love the iphone app for tracking.

The system is geared towards health. It is designed to get you to make good food choices (food type and portion) and getting you to exercise.

The meetings I love for the emotional/psych aspect. You think you are the only one who will do weird things to try and cheat without cheating and then someone confesses to the same thing at a meeting and you learn from it and feel less alone.

My first two times doing it I had the same results, I lost 20 pounds over the course of a year.
