How to teach baby to become mobile

1. Put baby on the floor sitting up, about 3 feet away from wires. Any kind will do.

2. Wait.

At least, this seems to be how it's going for us. DS will not try to move for much, but today he started to scoot himself forward ever so slowly until he could reach the wire of the monitor. I need to move them behind the TV, but if I do that, his motivation for learning to crawl will be gone. Smile

How's everyone else's mobility coming along? I know we have a wide range. Anyone else not quite crawling yet?

Re: How to teach baby to become mobile

  • My kid still can't roll from tummy to back yet. He's only started rolling onto his tummy in the last 3 weeks. From there, he can spin in a circle on his tummy, and will occasionally go backwards with his back-up scream while trying to get something in front of him.

We have a giant picture window in our living room, and it's right at his level when he stands, so he loves to stand at the window sill banging on the window. (Yes. I have a window licker.) It never fails though, the only time he really tries to cruise is when he's on that window ledge trying to get to the plugs in the outlet that are under the middle part of the window. He will stop when we say no, but sometimes it'll startle him enough to make him cry. It's terrible that I find that pouty little "I can't have it" lip absolutely hilarious.

We've tried to "help" him crawl, but he just screams. Instead, we're working on walking. He's got really good at using the walking toys, and can make it a pretty decent distance before having the toy run into something. He's also good at falling down when he's done with a standing toy. (I hope that makes sense.) I just don't think my kid is ever going to crawl.

DS just scooted backwards a few times today and it seemed to tick him off.

DD was cruising all over the place before she started crawling. We didn't think she would ever crawl, but one day I put her on the floor of our hotel room and off she went. No rocking on the hands and knees or anything, she just took off.

  • We've got an army type crawl going on here, only scoots herself. She can get to anything she wants with that technique. The only time I've seen her up on all fours is on a mattress.

She can stand playing with her table, but we have to put her there, she cant pull herself up. I was looking around our family room this morning, and we don't really have much for her to practice on.

  • DS rolls like crazy but he isn't pulling up, standing unassisted or crawling in any way. Sometimes when he's on his belly and pissed he pushes backwards but that's it.  I'm all for trying the wires trick. Or putting the remote on the floor. Heck look, now i have something to do this weekend.  :)

I've been sitting on the floor with him sitting in front of me. He'll grab my fingers and pull himself up that way. It's helped quite a bit.

At first DS would only get on all fours on a mattress too. Just last week he started getting on all fours in the living room. He still won't do much army crawl.

  • DS has been crawling since about 7 1/2 months old. He gets in to EVERYTHING! My friends LO is 10 months almost 11 and her pedi said not to worry about crawling. Her pedi told her they dont even look at crawling as a milestone anymore b/c some babies simply have no interest in it and go straight to walking.... :)

We also started by letting DS pull up with our fingers first. Eventually, he would try to pull up on me if I was sitting with him on the floor. Last night, he pulled himself up for the first time... in the freaking crib. I promptly put him on the floor, took out his mattress and lowered it, since DH has been putting it off for 2 freaking months. Then again this morning, DS tried pulling up on the coffee table. It'll come in time.

  • baby girl has no interest in crawling- i put her on her belly and she'll flay her feet around but then she gives up and puts her head down- its so pathetic- LOL

and she's not really rolling over yet either- every once in a while she'll roll from back to belly- but she hates being on her belly- she's almost 10 months old......
