Any tips on how to treat really bad diaper rash?
DS has made it 17 months without ever getting diaper rash. Now he's finishing up a round of antibiotics and today developed a nasty rash .... Poor guy can't even sit on his bottom. I left his diaper off a while this evening, gave him a baking soda bath, and used triple paste. I'm hoping it will be gone by morning but if not I'd like to hear your tips.
Re: Diaper Rash
Instead of using wipes, run his bum under warm bath water and blow it dry with the hair dryer on warm setting, not hot. For diaper cream, I use a 1:1 mixture of Aquaphore and regular strength Maalox (not cherry flavor). I mix them in a small tupperware container with a Popsicle stick, tounge depressor, butterknife, etc..
The aquaphore keep his skin moistened and protected from more poo. The Maalox takes the acidity out of the poo and off of his bum.
I have never heard of mixing with Maalox before!
I switch between a few creams - Desitin or Boudreaux's most often, I think. They are usually okay for us.
With DS's worse rash, the pedi gave us some ointment, but I can't remember what it was. (He happened to have it at a normal appointment.) If it really won't go away, ask the doctor.
I second the blow drying!!
I know what you do with your blow dryer
I agree with everything everyone suggested. If it doesn't clear up, or if you notice some little white heads, then it may be fungal. If that's the case, you can try the lowest concentration Canesten (as per my doctor and my pharmacist) on top of the desitin or triple paste.
Haha my blow dryer gets around.
