DS won't play with me

My LO is almost 20 months and since he is not speaking we are looking into having an evaluation. The problem is that all the suggestions people give me and I read online my LO wont let me do with him.  For instance, if I try and read to him he comes over takes the book and throws it away.  I got flash cards to try with him but again, when I try to play he just pushes them away.  He never wants so sit still so its very hard to do any "learning" games.

I have tried doing funny voices etc but nothing seems to help. Any advice would be appreciated.

Thanks

Re: DS won't play with me

  • It may have nothing to do with you and everything to do with the activity. Try playing active games with him. Worry about the playin first, then incorporating words. Maybe he'd like to play redlight, greenlight, and eventually give some commands himself.

  • My DS is around that age and there is no chance he can sit for more than a minute and give you his attention to learn something.  Reading books is extrememly difficult, so I just read out loud and his listens while he is doing his own thing.

We can play a really quick game of hea and shoulders... but I have to touch his head/shoulders/knees/toes and sing quickly while he squirms

  • My son is very similar. He doesn't play with me but I try to parallel play with/ around him and talk about what I am doing. If he is plaing with cars, I grab a car and make car noises and send the car down the ramp. This is a lot of how kids play at this age.

My son is also speech delayed among other things and his therapists are wonderful about giving me ideas on what to do with him.

After your evaluation, if he is delayed and qualifies, they will work with him on his attention span and how to play with another person. My sons occupational therapist has been especially helpful in this area. She really pushes him and makes him pay attention for long then 30 seconds.

    Good luck with the evaluation!

This is good advice. You could also look into DIR Floortime! I did this a lot with my son when he was younger and I think it has really helped with his engagement with me and his language is great now.
