Babies: 9 - 12 Months

CIO puking?!

LO hasn't slept with us at all since he was born, except maybe a few times. He had a co-sleeper for the first month but has slept in his "chair" since then.

Well he had croup a couple of weeks ago and has slept with us most of the nights, or if not all not long, at least a couple of hours each night. And he seems to refuse going to sleep in his chair.

We are trying the CIO method but it's hard. LO even worked himself up so much last night he vomited his milk all over himself!

Is this normal? Any advice will help I'm sure. TIA (:

Re: CIO puking?!

  • DS has done this two times.at my sister house on a visit. And the first night attempt at cio sleepeasy.

The Sleepeasy incident freaked me out so the next night, not wanting to give up on the idea of sleep training, I gave his bedtime bottle a half hour before starting bedtime routine. Figured if it wasn't freshly in his belly undigested right before cio, he may not get sick so easily. It worked! Hasn't happened since. At my sisters house, he was so out of sorts sleeping in a new place and DH fed him 8 oz right at bedtime that was before cio...so I knew ther was a correlation between full belly and puking.
He really doesn't cry anymore at bedtime, very rare if he does, I just make sure to listen if his cries are to that level, if I feel they are, I will pick him up, rock him to calm state and put him back in crib drowsy, but awake. He may fuss for a few minutes, but then fall asleep. not nearly a puke level cry.

Is it normal to puke at cio..eh..idk but I think it's a common occurrence. Hope this helps. Good luck!

  • I've done CIO with both of my daughters. DD1 vomited once, and that was enough for me to stop the process, and try again later. To me, she simply wasn't ready for sleep training. I tried again 4 months later, and she did much, much better.

It's not uncommon for them to get so worked up that the vomit. Do what you're most comfortable with.

  • We haven't done CIO, but our ped said if they're getting worked up enough to vomit then CIO isn't right for them.  She said they should not keep escalating enough to get to that point.

  • Are you rocking him to sleep and then putting him down? Our son won't go to sleep at first on his own but if he wakes up later we'll let him CIO and he usually gets back down on his own in less than 10 min. And has never thrown up. If he threw up I would look into other methods. I'm just wondering if the initial going to sleep is the issue you are having.
  • Let me also mention that he fights sleep and cries even while I am rocking him and I just keep singing and rocking. They are so interested at this age and have separation anxiety it's hard!
  • Well it's just so weird for him to be doing this! He's NEVER slept with us except a handful of times. But I think he got used to it when he was sick.

DH got him to sleep last night he just needed to be talked to. So now we know what to do!

Thanks ladies... I will talk to it at his 9 month check up on Monday! :)
