Sleep Easy - 1st & 2nd Night Update

Hi everyone -

I posted about starting Sleep Easy a couple days ago - First night was very difficult - probably more so for me than my son.. anyway, here are my notes -

First night - he went down at 6:40 and cried 40 minutes at bedtime. I only did a couple checks, because it made him worse. During the first night he woke at 10pm, cried for 18 minutes and fell back asleep. I did a dream feed at midnight to make sure he wasn't hungry, as he kept wriggling around. He seemed to eat a regular amount, but didn't seem to be starved. He woke again at 1:30, whined for 10 minutes/fell asleep.. he woke again at 2:30, cried for 2 minutes and talked/babbled for about 10 more minutes/fell asleep... Woke up again for 2 minutes at 4:30, fell back asleep. Then he woke for the day at 6:30ish.

Last night = In bed by 6:50, cried 7 minutes total. Up again at 8:36, cried 5 minutes. Up again at 10:57, cried 2 minutes. Up again at 12:06, cried maybe 1 minute. Up at 3:17, cried maybe 1 minute again. Up whining a little at 4:36 - Awake for day at 5:30. (Not sure why his wake time differed today?)  No feeds last night -

So, he is still waking up 5 times a night, crying on/off periodically.

Do you think it's because he's so used to getting up so often, so it's become habitual? Anyone else have these results?

Hoping it gets better with time. I don't want to jinx anything, but I feel like it's getting better already.

We've also started with naps too, and yesterday he did great. Only cried minimally going down, and slept 1.5 hours for 2 naps.. which is unheard of here. He's currently down for his first nap of the day (at 7:30) which is a little early, but he woke really early too. Are early naps bad? I didn't want to keep him up any longer, because he seemed tired already.

This has definitely been emotionally draining, but I hope the rewards are so worth it.

Re: Sleep Easy - 1st & 2nd Night Update

  • It sounds like your LO is waking up a little bit b/n sleep cycles. From what I have read this is natural, and eventually they stop fussing and just head into the next cycle. DS still whimpers sometimes b/n cycles but not nearly as much as in the beginning. (We sleep trained at 6 months, and he is just over 7 months now.) As for naps, I know SleepEasy says not to do naps earlier just b/c they wake early, but I don't really follow that rule. He's a best to get down if he's overtired. No advice here for the early wake-ups except that I try to stick by the "at least 11 hours in the crib" guideline. A lot of mornings DS will wake around 5:30 but it's only been 10 hours. He will sometimes just babble, sometimes fuss, but I leave him alone unless he starts really coming apart. Most of the time now he will actually fall back asleep until 7:00 or 7:30. That extra little sleep does wonders for the both of us.

  • Pp seems right. Waking up at normal wake times but if hes getting self back to sleep on own that's a start.  Hopefully next couple nights we be a .ittle better. As long as u see improvement. Stick with it.
