spoon-feeding

Do you let your LO use the spoon all of the time?  Does he/she feed themselves yogurt, soup, cereal, applesauce, etc?

Do you just let them on their own and they eat what they get and the rest is everywhere?

I'm still feeding DS stuff like that.  He does decent with the fork, we are still working on the piercing the food, but spoons is a lost cause right now.  If I let him try and feed himself its everywhere but in his mouth (well, maybe some gets int there, because he knows where it goes).

Re: spoon-feeding

  • I still spoon-feed or hand-feed, DD. :/ She eats like a bird! She's very picky so whatever I can get her to eat is an accomplishment. haha She refuses to sit in a highchair. So, I'm getting her an activity table with chairs to see if that works out better for us. That way we can practice her self -feeding techniques.  I'm tired of running after her. lol

  • I let DD feed herself but I also use a spoon to feed her at the same time.

  • I started introducing/teaching the fork and spoon a while back, but I have totally slacked. I still spoon feed yogurt and soup, and he finger feeds most other things. He can use the fork sometimes, but he needs practice and encouragement that I have to start being consistent with.

I should try this! But, then again she needs somewhere to stay still in.

  • I let Nick start using utensils on his own months ago. He refused to let me do it for him. He's actually pretty good at feeding himself things like yogurt on his own. He still makes a mess but it's not too bad, however, it also depends on his mood too and how much he wants to try. It also depends on the ofood too. Pasta he gets a lot of sauce on his face still manages to eat most of the pasta.

  • This is so frustrating around here. He will not let me spoon feed him at all. He freaks, cries, the works. He is so stubborn he has to do it himself, even if it takes forever. Sometimes he lets me help scoop the food, but he has to feed it to himself. Then there are the times (like tonight) where he will not feed himself and won't let me do it either. Good times. He is not bad with yogurt and other thicker things, but I haven't tried soup or anything, that'd be a disaster.

  • It all depends on what she's wearing. She does OK with a spoon, but it's still a mess.

  • I let him use the spoon by himself almost all the time. He's getting pretty good at it. He still drips on himself quite a lot, but it's not a crazy huge mess most of the time.

  • LO has self-fed since the beginning, we never spoon-fed her.  She does well with it now but gets distracted and will let things drip.

We started only getting thicker yogurt.  That Stoneyfield stuff is so drippy!  She does better with the thicker yogurt.  Applesauce is good too.

She's pretty good at piercing food with a fork too.  Tonight she had ravioli and pierced all 8 pieces!  (She's not a big eater, so this was a good night, haha!)

  • DS feeds himself everything.  He does pretty well; he gets a bit messy, but he won't even let me touch the spoon to help him!

  • Lena is a diva, so she picks and chooses when she wants to use a spoon. Some days, she will use it and others she flat out refuses. When I am in a hurry or out somewhere, I feed her just for the sake of time and/or cleanliness. At home I encourage her to do it as much as possible, but I will feed her if she refuses because I'd rather her eat something.
  • DS is great with a fork! Spoon he can use as well but I won't let him use it for foods like yogurt or soup because I know he'd make a mess! He's just not ready yet!

  • we are doing the same with the spoon feeding. I feed him any cereal, yogurt, applesauce, etc myself. And I have to put the food in the fork for him as well and then hand it to him. Most of the time I'll just cut up his food into pieces, like at the restaurant, and he will hand feeds himself. It's a work in progress =)

  • we do both, but most of what actually makes it into his mouth is what I feed him
