Frozen vs. Fresh???

Does frozen/thawed BM smell or taste different from freshly pumped BM?

DS2 will take a bottle of fresh BM fairly well (though he still prefers the b00b!), but really struggles with taking a bottle of thawed BM.

I tasted both (weird!) and they did taste different... not bad or sour... but a bit metallic or something- I can't put my finger on it!

Is it normal for thawed BM to taste different?  Or do I have a lipase issue?  DS2 DOES drink it, but it takes longer and he fights it a bit....

TIA!

  • Sounds like you have a lipase issue.

If he still drinks it, is it OK to give to him??

I'm finding that with a level 2 nipple (rather than level 1), he IS drinking it... just takes a while.

Also, can I add in a bit of fresh pumped milk to change the taste?  Obviously I would do this once it is thawed and ready to drink

  • Yes it is fine to give him. All lipase does is helps break down the milk in baby' s tummy. Excess just starts the process before it gets to baby' s tummy.  You can mix with fresh or scald it before freezing to alter the taste. Search scalding milk on www.kellymom.com for instructions.

  • We have the same issue but sometimes my LO refuses to eat it. I was not using my freezer stash for about 2 weeks and then I thought that I needed to so I mix 1 ounce thawed to 3 ounces fresh for daycare.
