Car seat dilemma

I have a carseat that I purchased from a friend that I trust.  It's a Britax Companion, so sort of like the Chaperone but with a lower weight limit (22 lbs, which I didn't realize until yesterday).  The seat seems to be in okay condition.  It was, however, manufactured in January 2008, and she used it through two kids.  It also doesn't fit in the car that well - our Jetta it either fits okay in the middle, or you have to move the passenger seat up, and the Mazda3 you have to move the passenger seat WAY up.  I'm contemplating trading it in at the BRU trade-in event.  I could get a KeyFit 30 for $145... but that would mean I've spent $200 on infant seats, since I paid her $60 for the Companion.

What would you do?  ANy opinions?  Keep the one I have and save that money for a convertible earlier than I'd planned, or go with the KeyFit and maybe get a couple more months of use out of it?

Re: Car seat dilemma

  • If It doesn't fit in your car I would get rid of it immediately. Safety is more important then the 200.

  • It DOES fit, just not comfortably for the front passengers.  I wouldn't be able to ride in the front seat of the Mazda, for instance, and in the Jetta my knees are only an inch or two from the dash.

  • Before doing anything I would try the keyfit and see if it would fit any better. Our second car (which until this summer was our only car) is a beetle and I don't know that the keyfit will buy you a ton of space. If it will buy you a bit of room, though, I would. It's not safe to be too close to the dash, so any space you can save there makes the front seat passenger safer.

  • I would go ahead and trade it in. That way you can get a seat that will fit in your car better and may have the weight limit you need.
  • Whatever you decide, you should educate yourself on weight limits, when the carseat was made, and what will fit in your car.

  • Trade it.  Also make sure the next car seat you purchase fits in your car so you can all travel together.

  • I agree that I would make sure the KeyFit works in your car before you make a decision.

If it fits okay in the middle of the Jetta, can you just use that vehicle when you travel together as a family? Whoever drives the Mazda can just use that whenever they're driving baby somewhere alone.

  • If you're looking to save money, I'd trade it in and get a convertible that would accommodate a newborn.

  • I recently purchased the Chicco KeyFit 30 and I too have a Mazda3 (2010). I can put the seat in the middle and I still need to adjust the passenger seat, also I can't put the handle back, it has to stay up in the locked position.

If I were to put the seat behind the passenger seat the seat would have to go way up and nobody could really ride in it unless they are sitting in the back.

  • Food for thought but I highly doubt you will be wanting to use a bucket seat past 22lbs anyway. Our DS is 16lbs now and he is getting way to heavy to lug in and out of the car. We are buying our convertable seats this weekend actually.
