High-Risk Pregnancy

Thrombocytopenia

I had thrombocytopenia pre-pregnancy. It has gotten worse as expect but on Monday I got my platelets checked and they are down to 26! My ob made an appointment for me with my hematologist.

At my last us baby was breech and I'm nervous she won't turn and ill have to have a cs. (I know I still have time for her to turn)

i guess I'm just getting really worried and scared about this situation. Has anyone else had this problem?

Re: Thrombocytopenia

  • Wow 26 is really low! I would not want to deliver a baby with a platelet count that low. Will they treat that? Can you get a platelet infusion or two prior to delivery? I have no experience with pregnant women and thrombocytopenia but I know anyone else in the hospital would get treated unless they were on chemo and then their threshold is a little lower unless they are actively bleeding. I'm just curious what they will do for you. I hope you get your platelet count up before the baby comes! Best of luck!

  • I'm a nurse as well so I know the basics about it, but I've been to a high risk ob and he just said to have platelets on hand if they got to 20 and lower and a cs only if medically necessary.

I know no epi and me my md wants to avoid a cs.

  • Can't you be treated? I also had pre-existing thrombocytopenia (ITP) and my platelets were 50 when I was 38 weeks. I was put on 75 mg of prednisone and they were over 100 when I delivered, I was able to have an epidural.
