Picking up carseat with baby

I'm 4 weeks post op and Have not been lifting DS in his car seat, only DS or lighter. DH carries the carseat and baby.

I just realized I have a breastfeeding class on Monday that is for women only. But it doesn't really matter since DH works that night.

I know everyone is different. When did you pickup your little one in the car seat after? Did you wait for 6 week post op or just go with it before.

I just started wearing him and last night at the first feed I felt sore on my scar but not after. But he was also in my arms most of the day because he was cranky pants so it could be just too much baby holding standing for mommy...lol

Re: Picking up carseat with baby

  • My OB said I could lift DS in his seat after 2 weeks. As long as you're healing well, I'd do it.

  • I was picking her up, lifting her high into my SUV, and carrying her down the block by 3 weeks. I overdid it by carrying her down the block (going out for lunch with friends, carried her about 2 short downtown blocks). Also, it was hard to lift her into the car because it was high and involved a bit of twisting. It shouldn't be too hard to lift her though, and use the stroller or the carrier if you have to walk far.

  • I was picking my DD up after a week.
  • MH was home for the first month (his company closed the day we brought Lucas home) so he primarily carried him. I think I might have started lifting him around 3 weeks when I went to breastfeeding class.

  • First time was 9 days PP when we got released from the hospital. (Long stay was for DS, not me.) I tried not to overdo it, and I always used my snap-n-go unless I was going from the car to the house.

Like someone else said, use a stroller if you're walking very far. Also, the thing that got me about 4 weeks PP was that I was twisting too much to lift it into my SUV - I had a bit of pain, but it went away after I rested a few days (and let someone else do that). So be careful of twisting at the torso if you're having any pain.

I believe the official doctor recommendation was 2 weeks PP.

  • Just focus on lifting correctly and you should be fine.

  • I was told I could after a week. I was not able to until about 10 weeks pp. I have to lift her over my head to get her into the truck and it was impossible.

I started driving 2 weeks PP both times and carried DS/DD in the car seat to the car.  I always used the stroller if we went anywhere.

This!  DH helped the first few days, then he went away for work & my mom came.  She's a retired nurse and INSISTED on doing it for me (even though she's kinda old-HA!).  After my 2 week apt, I asked my OB and she said "oh yeah, I meant to say don't life anything heavier than DS, but it's ok to carry him in his car seat".

  • I don't really remember - but I do know that a few times, I would put the carseat in the car and then put DS into the seat that way (after my second c-section).

  • They didn't give me specific time constraints for when I could start lifting, etc.  I just increased activity as tolerated.  I'm 9 days PP and have carried DD in her car seat for short distances.  I think my doctor probably wanted me to wait for 2 weeks.....
